On my flexplate there are a couple sets of holes for the torque converter to slide through, I would assume that the large holes allow too much play, and there are small holes too small for the bolts to go through, but the holes that would seem to be the right size don't line up correctly. So can the bolts go through the big holes, or should I try to find a different flexplate?

The fmx uses two different bolt patterns, 11.500 & 9.500. All are 13in except the one is 12in. Also there is a different diameter on the converter stub, on one also. Search for FMX in Google and then open the link for TP Converters. I can't seem to get it to copy and/or send a link here. Has good info on all the size's etc. on Ford tranny's.

The big holes are for the converter drain plugs. If you try bolting the converter to them you will tear that flexplate out in no time. Get the right flexplate or converter.
