OK guys, I'm going to let the cat out of the bag I've had these gauges installed for almost a year now, but I didn't want everyone to know because I didn't want everyone and thier brother doing it. But it's been long enough, here's a pic of my dashboard. I love it. I had a tach on the column but this is 10 times cleaner.
The green center LED is high beam indicator. I do not recommend it though, it is FAR too bright. I can't stand it it is so bright at night. I am thinking about turning it into a shift light. The steering wheel is Mustang II, with a Maverick Grabber door panel emblem in the center.
Looks great charlie! I actually pondered doing that with the '74 a few years back when we first got it , but I got everything working perfectly, so I'm not gonna mess with it anytime soon. I might add a couple guages later, but they will be necessary for monitoring a couple important issues later on down the line.
holy sh!t i'll be damned!!! i have this exact setup in the works right now. I already have the gauges in, and I'm working on the blinkers now. Damn again, I thought I'd be first!!! But it does look great!!
Hi Charlie; Nice gauge set-up. I too have been planning on using Auto Meter gauges; those are SportComp series, aren't they? One way in which I was looking to install my gauges that would differ from yours is that I was leaning towards using an AutoMeter in-dash tach where you appear to have used the type usually installed in a cup. Trouble is, nobody ever carries one of those in stock, and so I have yet been able to look one over "in the flesh" to see if such an installation would be feasible. Did you ever consider going this route? I wondered if you'd ruled it out for some particular reason. As far as the smaller gauges go, I intend to drill some holes higher up in the dash and install them in cups, set part way in the holes, and canted towards the driver, or using some kind of tubing (like exhaust pipe, if I can find the right diameter) to accomplish the same purpose (ie; creating individual nacelles for the gauges). In any case, nice application on your car. Thanks for the inspiration to those of us "in process". John B.
Nope, they are the in-dash units. Thanks for the compliments, one thing worth mentioning is the Maverick speedo cable does not attach to the Autometer speedo, but a 1965 Mustang cable does.
speedo cable Question for you. I have attached and mounted my gauges and my speedo does in fact fit. The only this is there's no way to hook it to the autometer, but it does slide together and show speed, if its correct I don't know yet. Charlie are you getting any speedo bounce at low speeds 20-40mph?
No I don't. Sounds like your speedo cable is binding. Just sticking it on there is not going to be good in the long run, there's nothing keeping it from falling off and it is probably sitting at an angle now and cousing your needle jump.
Thanks for the response Charlie. I didn't remember the in-dash units having the silver ring around them in the pictures I've seen before. I guess my memory is getting short. One last question; what are the 4 small gauges you are using? Looks like oil pressure, water temp and fuel, but can't see #4. Thanks for your time. John B.
The 4th is voltage. Autometer makes lots of styles, but I think all the Sport comps have the ring. I wanted them to match my dash gauges.
charlie, like the dash. i am in the middle of putting dakota digtial gauges in my 71'. all the gauges are in two pods. they fit nice in the inst. cluster. i hope to have pics. soon. the steering wheel center is a nice touch.m7a1v
