Mine has brand new hoses and fluid. Less than 100 miles on both...

I read this years ago. The black hoses actually use some carbon in the rubber. The carbon does conduct elect. Someone asked this years ago in a car mag and the answer was so surprising to me it just stuck.

 

I did the tests on mine with a meter and it only had 0.013 Volts at the coolant and Zero at the hose ...even with everything turned on
so I guess I`m safe

 

blownmav figured it out the glycol and rubber combination will really increase the conductivity. I know seems like I'm full of crap but I do know the electrical I work on wharf cranes which are 4160acv and have a whole mess of experience in dmm. I know that it does not make sense. The resistance in the rubber is accurate. The meter does not lie. if dont believe me start your lawnmower and piss on the sparkplug boot and or wire and let know your results of the test

I think I'll pass on that one, its bad enough when the cars not running and you forget to turn off the key then pull a plug wire off. Ouch!!!

 

Cmon guys this is a high impedance voltmeter, it's probably just picking up interference from the ignition. If you take an old fashioned low impedance voltmeter you will get a reading of 0. If you connect a test lamp instead of the voltmeter you will not get a light, right .

 

I am using an old cheap radio shack volt meter, with the needle that shows the reading. I am getting alot of voltage off the rubber of the hose...just touching the red wire to the battery hot, and the black wire touching the hose as a "ground".

 

Yeah, radiator hoses conduct electricity. Shouldn't be anything to worry about. If there's voltage between battery (+) and the hose, no big deal, but if there's voltage between the hose and ground, then I'd be concerned...

My Grandpa used to have a mower that you had to "knock" the plug wire off to shut it down. Did that one bare handed once .

Ya, seems like gramps could have warned me a little better but, If memory serves me right, I knocked a couple sprinkler heads off the weekend before.
