I'm trying to set the timing on my 71 302 mav. I have the timing light and know how to use it but I don't know which number mark to use on the number line written on the bottom of the harmonic balancer. I've read that the setting is 6 to 12 degrees, but I don't know what this means.

Check coil wire. Sometimes they loose contact in the cap when you change to a new cap. Also check to see if coli wire is good.

    What Frank said!
Double check to make sure the coil wire and condensor wire were not accidentally grounded when installed. Also did you set the points in the ramp position.
Not being mean, but you did install the rotor? Have done it myself!(y)

if i were u i would trash the old unreliable point setup for a crane cams xr-i electronic conversion kit. its simple to install and it has an adjustable rev limiter built in. and you can rely on it. summit p/n is CRN-750-170. it really is worth the extra dollars to get this piece[IMG]

I agree...you can install the Pertronix kit inside your original distributor and get rid of points forever. Usually about $70-$90 depending on where you purchase it. Very easy to install and your car will start AND run SO much better.

its not how often you have to change out the points, but how often you have to adjust them. which gets aggervating. the conversion kit is so much easier, and you NEVER have to adjust them again
