Help me out guys! '68 model 302. What side does the timing pointer mount on? Right now its on the drivers side. Hard as hell to see, Is that correct? Next question; what do most of you set your total timing to and are any of you running on regular 87 octane? I'd like to if I can. Flat top pistons, block not decked, Heads stock, 268H cam. DSII Ignition. Any suggestions? brad
On a 68 - 302 the drivers side is correct for the timing pointer. Starting in 70 the timing pointer was moved to the passenger side. This was due to the location of the lower radiator hose, hose was on the passenger side 69 and earlier and on the drivers side 70 and later.
Well that could explain my problem, since my 68 302 is in my 73 maverick, the radiator hose is also on the drivers side. Hmmmm.
You would need to swap timing covers and balancers to the later style. You may be able to bolt on the later timing pointer along with the balancer swap. Most aftermarket balancers are marked for all 3 pointer locations. Does your lower pulley have 3 or 4 bolts?
Or just bolt on a later pointer, find TDC and install a timing tape with 0* where it lines up with the pointer.
I ran into the same problem, so I got it on TDC, then on the other side I made a pointer, then mark a line on the balancer.....I can get to it real easy.
It bolts on. So iI guess it might be possible to just move it to the other side and remark the balancer. brad
