    i don't have a maverick just yet
but going to look at one soon locally
    it's a 1977 4dr. 6 cyl. with 78,000 miles for $750.
the body is not that great, has very little rust
    and has many new parts
the color, i think he said a lime yellow?
i'm not lookin to restore her just use it for a daily driver,
cheap on gas and easy to do some of the repairs myself
i'm sick and tired of these newer computerized, front wheel drive cars that i can't fix or tuneup
what do you guys think about the one i'm going to look at? i hear the inline 6 is a great motor
and what should i lookout for in these mavs
looking at these after 30 years, i think it's a great looking
little car the may meet my needs
    thanks

    welcome and good luck!

Back in the 70"s people bought mavericks for the straight sixes fuel mileage and reliability. My friends and I cruised many nights In our Moms grocery getting mavericks, vega"s and pinto"s, do to what people thought were high fuel prices back then.I worked at a Sunoco station when gas was gas and all the hot rods came in for dial a pump service

    thanks, boy do i remember,
my father traded his gas hog 67 pontiac GTO for a 72 beetle
and he hated the thing so much
and just after 2 months, traded the beetle for a new 74 nova 6 cyl.
i remember he did test drive a new maverick but got a better deal on the nova

I'd lookout for a rusted cowl vent. These cars (like the Mustangs) are infamous for that.

You might want to look for signs of a leaking cowl vent by seeing if the carpet is wet or other signs up under the dash.

You can pour water down the cowl vent to see if any drips inside the car.

I'm not sure you want to deal with a leaky cowl vent on a daily driver. They do make a plexi-glass shield that goes over the cowl vent and seals it off, so that is an option too.

Anyway, good luck with it if you get it and Welcome to the site.

Welcome to the board :tiphat: . My 38 year old car starts up everyday for me. I'm awful proud of that fact and bring it up on a regular basis whenever someone starts up about my Maverick. Can't argue with that statement :) . So, good luck with your search and I hope you gain the satisfaction that we all have here owning "the car famous for not breaking down".

Welcome to the board.:Welcome: My husband I have a small restoration shop where we have restored a good many Mavericks, including three of our own. Take a good look at the front and rear frame rails. They are notorious for rusting out. The floors and torque boxes are also prone to rust, so take a good hard look at those too. If the cowl is rusty and leaking water, it's a fair bet that the front floor boards will be rusted out too. Check the quarter panels for any signs of past body repairs. Bubbling or cracked paint is a good sign that they have been worked on in the past.

    thanks, guys
i hope this car i'm going to look at,
don't have the mention rust on it but i live in upstate N.Y.
i,m going to ask him if i can get it on a lift and check underneath but again it's only a $750. car and hope it's a score for me (can't afford to spend more money)
i really want to be a proud mav owner and can't wait to see the car
the story is this guy is a auto mech.who got the car from the original owners estate as a form of payment for services
since he had it he put alot of new parts into the car
(gas tank, lines, rad.,tires, brakes, tuneup, carb rebuilt, etc.)now he wants to sell the car so he can fix up his truck he only had it for 6 months
so really it's a low mileage (78000) almost one owner car
he hasn't advertise the car for sale yet
how i know about it is that he is fixing my car at his house and told me about the maverick

coming from n.j. originally i'd have to agree with rick on the cowls. i take a gallon milk jug with me and ask to pour it into the cowl vents in front of the windshield. i he says no, do not walk away, RUN as fast as you can. that's a major fix.

but if i find that the cowl vent leaks not too bad
i can seal the vents on top like rick book said, right ?
also what kind of emissions stuff does a 77 have ?
i don't know much about the later 70's cars
hope it doesn't have a "check engine or service engine soon" light, i hate that light
    thanks
