Putting in a headliner, any suggestions

I am installing a new headliner in my car, I've never attempted this task are there any suggestions.

Just one......get a professional to do it. You will have to remove the windshield and gasket, back glass and gasket and the roof rail weatherstripping to do it correctly. Be very difficult to do without removing the glass.

 

This is not an easy task. I've done several of them and it still takes me all day to do all of the above mentioned. If you do decide to do it, don't try to resuse the gaskets. Go ahead and buy new ones ahead of time. Actually, you need to go ahead and get them even if you hire the job out.

 

Thanks for information, this is the only way to know what you're getting into by asking the people who have been there. Your advice is much appreciated.

Don't do it. I paid to get done about 3 months ago, glad I did. Get the new rubber gaskets also...got mine off ebay a little cheaper than autokrafters and faster shipping.

 

The concensus is don't do it, you've convinced me. Its off to the interior man I go.

My husband and I have put a few headliners in Mavericks and let me tell you, it's a royal pain in the a**. There is something of a science involved with installing headliners, and there is absolutely nothing easy about installing them. If you have never done one before, I would seiously consider taking the car to a professional and have them install it.

 

i was just about to try and do mine as well thanks for this thread i think i will get mine done by perfessionals as well

 

ok all that being said, I need to take my windshield out for other reasons. To this point have done just about everything there is to don on a car except removing the front or rear glass. Any tips or “how to”s would be appreaciated.

 

The 1st thing you need to do if you haven't already is order both front and back glass weatherstrips. It would be a big mistake to try to reuse an old one even if they look good. Second thing is to remove all of the moldings which requires a special clip release tool. Be careful here or you will destroy the moldings. Then you simply take a box cutter or something similar and cut the outer edge of the old weatherstrip off all the way around and you should be able to see the entire windshield from the outside. Simply lift the glass out at that time and place it in a safe spot.
