Ok, my '76 Mav is missing the ignition, among other things. It has been sitting in a field for two years but supposedly ran good before being parked.
I would like to do a compression test on the 302 before I start buying the parts I need to get it up and running. If the engine is shot, I will just junk it and put my 351 in.

It is missing the alt, carb, random vac lines and throttle cable from what I can see.

I just need to get power to the starter to crank it.

Jump the battery to the ignition terminal on the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

No the selenoid is on the inner apron right beside the battery. The positive terminal of the battery bolts to it.The new ignition switch may not do you any good because generally you have to turn the ignition switch with the key to remove it.

There is just a hole in the side of the steering column, so I assume the old switch has already been removed. Will a new one slide right in there?

The solinoid is on the fender in the engine compartment(right side)Has 2 big cables attached to it(one on each side) at the least. One or two small posts on the front.Usually marked I and S.You can jump from the 2 big posts or from the I to the Battery(safer, less amperage)If you jump the 2 big posts use an 8 guage wire at least.Better yet get a remote starter switch meant for cranking cars over remotely(from under the hood)Good luck:tiphat:

Can't get the ignition switch out without a key, or drilling some serious holes...

Solenoid...this is an old picture...soon afterwards, I broke off one of the posts. But, luckily, they are cheap and obtainable from the local parts houses...

I need to type faster. If the column isnt damaged where the lock cyl goes then yes put a new one in and go.But it doesnt just drop in you need to pull the steering wheel to remove the old one which is now gone.Sooo I am guessing there may be some damage??? heck try it anyways if it drops in and works worry about the details later.

THanks guys. Just tried it. Turns over fine. Anyone know if/how much oil I should see while cranking it with a valve cover off?

There is some damage. It looks like someone ripped the old one out.
Hopefully I can replace it or wire in a start switch.

Your going to have to do alot of cranking to get oil at the rockers.Try priming the motor first.(spin the oil pump with a dummy dist and a drill)untill you see oil at the rockers. It has been sitting for 2 years right?? dont run it untill you can oil it up good.

Ok, one other question for you: I can wiggle the rockers and rotate the pushrods with my fingers. Is this normal on a 302? The rockers look like the 76 rail rockers, so they should be stock heads.

Yes thats normal for the rockers and push rods.I belive the 76 should have electronic ignition in it not points, the easy way to get the ignition live is to unplug the red and white wires from the module and make up some jumper wires to plug into the module then connect the jumper wires directly to battery power.
