i'd like to run headers on the 351w in my '73 project but im not paying over $300 for headers. i have a set of SBF mustang long tubes that i thought about cutting up to use. anyone else made their's? pro's,con's? any obsticles to look for? any help is appreciated
Since your towers are already cut,the only other problem is gonna be floor clearance. If you can get the motor to sit down a bit lower 302 headers should clear.I think the W raises the exhaust up about an inch, maybe inch & half.I'd mock it up,you may not have to mod them much,if any depending how low they hung down on a 302..
its not as hard as most would make it out to be. i've made several car and bike exhausts by utilising scraps from the local muffler shop. if your really looking to optimise flow for performance, then it can be tedious, and involved. but the actual fabrication is simple. and its actually easier to modify then create, so if you've got some in hand, just cut and manipulate em. as i read this, im sure i've actually contributed nothing, but oh well.if you were closer, i'd just come show you.
Mavman made a set for his before doing the MII conversion. Bought a box of u bends and straight pipe. Say's he would never do it again though. If look's are not essential then you can piece some together out of any tubing available but to use the teenie little tubes on the 302 headers, is kind of defeating the potential of the 351. Actually cast iron manifolds prepped right would be a better choice than the 302's. Course I just build race oriented stuff now so not real sure how street applications are being used. Just some info on price, 300 is not to bad for a good fit and some decent flow, I have paid lot's more for some 1 3/4 primary tube's for my Fairmont(fox body style)
