I have a chance at getting a 9" for really cheap, but it's out of a 1969 Ford P/U (narrow axle guy says) is it worth it? And what would I have to do to fit it? Thanks!

What are you going to do with the car. street driver, race/street etc?
The 9in housing will have to be shortened to 51.5 inches, housing flange to housing flange. A pair of 20.00 spring perches welded on and then the normal gear choice installed. For a decent and cheaper solution, I would go with am 8in Mav rearend. Will bolt in and is strong enough for most applications using an auto trans.

id say get it. chances are it has a posi wich alone is worth some money. at for using it in your car its overkill unless you plan on drag racing it pretty hard. if you narrow it i would sugest narowing it to 65 66 mustang with. replacement axles are readly avaible for those. that will save you the extra cost of custom axles.

Not sure where you get that information but most truck rearends were peg leg (non posi) rearends.

Id also suggest a maverick 8'' rearend.

There is a 9'' already narrowed to stock 8'' length in the forsale forum

Ditto............... most 9" rears were peg legs............ this includes ALL applications. There's a remote chance it's got a posi unit.

I had two 1966 F-100's and one I never messed with, got them as a package deal. I sold it to my best friend, turns out it had one it it. lol It was worth almost what I sold him the truck for. I never bothered to check it out, as I never figured it would have one in it

Your gonna find most have 31 spline axle, couple of 28's out there though not sure of the years without digging up info from somewhere on this puter.

I have a '68 and '69 F100 and neither of them have posi rears. My uncle's '69 Bronco does though. Only real way to know is to actually look and see for yourself.

60's and 70's trucks typically have 28 spline axles... if they are 2 wheel drive.

I've had a two 66's, a 76 and my buddy had a 79 F-150 and they all were 28 spline. We had an 85 bronco and it was 4x4 and had 31 spline axles.

Either way tho... they are simple to change to 28 or 31 spline chunks. You just change the spider gears

Ditto..........the earlier year's 9" pickups usually got pegleg 28 spline. Wasn't till the late 70's or early 80's that the 31's became more common. "Most" 4wd applications got Trac-loc units, no matter the year. The easiest way to find a 31 spline trac-loc 9" is to look under the 4wds from the mid 70's to the end of the 9" in 87.

Also, the axles and brake drums on truck axles have a larger wheel bolt circle. If you are narrowing, different axles are in order, and the brake drums can be redrilled.
