My maverick sat for 5 years outside, i did new oil change, distributor and cap, new battery, put some gas in it and cranked it up. the engine is a 170 or 180 not sure get them confused. she will run for a little bit then cut off, pulled gas line off of carb and it is definitly pumping gas when i pour fresh gas straight to carb it stays running alittle longer before cutting off, could it be bad gas or water in the gas tank, could it be my distributor or timing off, or could it be my carb. any clues or any advice would be appreciated
I would bet that your fuel line is clogged either at the fuel filter, and/or in your tank. It will run on fresh gas added at the carb, but sucks the line dry because one or both filters are clogged.
If your pouring gas in the carb it will definitely run because your pouring gas straight through it. When it's coming from the fuel line into the carb it's making it there but not through it too well, like something's half stopped up and running itself out of gas. Filters or pickup maybe stopped most of the way up too and starving itself.
If this was your problem where would you begin to try to fix it, will my 302 edelbrock carb go on this engine to see if it was a carb problem
I don't think your edelbrock will bolt on your intake, not too easily anyway. your best bet would be to find another carb similar to yours that you could try that you know is good or get someone to put a kit in yours. Gas don't like to sit around in a carb for long before it starts gumming and gelling up.
I built a carb I think is like yours a couple of weeks ago. I think it was a 170 in a '66 mustang. Is it a 1 barrel or 2 barrel carb? The one I did wasn't too bad to do just tear it apart, try to keep up with what your taking off where, clean it with carb cleaner or similar, and put it back together with new gaskets. Sometimes there's check valves, like ball bearings, in there so you gotta remember which hole to put them back in if they come out. There's Destructions in the kit also
