i tried to pull the timing chain but i could not get the pulley off im not sure if it is a special tool you need i got the bolt out but did not know if i should bang at it to remove it or is there a special way, this is the bottom pulley. so i pulled the oil pan off bottom and seen timing chain, it did not look bad but looks can be decieving, there was alot of oil gunk in there even though i just recently changed the oil. so i took the oil pump off and tried to turn the rod with a fitted socked and it would not turn so i am not sure if it should turn or should it be real tight like that. just looking for some advice. i am going to replace the oil pump because it looks old and gunked with oil, should i still replace timing chain. need to remove that pulley to get a better look of the timing chain. p.s. i really do not mean to sound so dumb just new to the game and learning alot of stuff from you guys.:tiphat:

...you need to remove the bolt in the center...it is screwed into the end of the crankshaft...beating on it is not an option.
you can rent a ...balancer puller...at advance auto parts...they also make an instalation tool to put it back on with.
by all means replace the oil pump...(y) clean the pickup screen and tube also.

i bring the #1 piston to top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. this way your timing marks will line up when you change the timing gear. we will talk more about that when you start to put it in...(y)

It really sounds to me like it's time to just rebuild or replace that engine. My guess is that the gunk is from the engine being ran with that old oil in it for so long, and when you changed the oil, the detergents in the fresh oil began breaking all that down, therefore suspending it in the oil. So it got sucked into your oil pump and gummed up the oil pump, which in turn sheared the roll pin on the distributor gear. This is just my theory.

If you are dead set on it, replace the oil pump for sure. I would go through the engine and clean all the gunk you can find out. This includes pulling the valve cover, as I'm sure it's gunked up under there too, and that gunk can work it's way back to the bottom also. If the timing chain dosen't look bad, then it may not be bad. Either way, I don't know about how to replaced it because I have never done it. I'm sure someone will know. Don't be beating on anything.

this gunk was all in the oil pan and way more and thicker at the top. how does the bottom of this engine look to you guys and would you put a new gasket on the oil pan or just leave the oil one it does not look bad? Thanks.

This piece did look alittle rusted and i was not sure if it was supposed to have oil on it. the piect that hooks to the oil pump that sucks the oil up it is supposed to circulate the oil through the engine is that correct frank? if that piece was clogged up stopping oil from getting to the oil pump and that locked up would it mess my engine up? i dont have alot of money to rebuild this engine. so looking for pointers on if it is worth it. hate to put money in this if it is junk i could rebuild my 302. but this engine did run when it was parked several years ago.

That was my first thought. Looks waaaay too dry in there for that engine to have been run recently.

so i got that new oil pump on and cleaned the oil pan and oil gunk up, i also put a new water pump on that i had. i gave it a new oil change and she started up:burnout:. i still need to adjust the timing but it was nice to hear her start after all this. is there a place to rent a timing light for this and what is the specs supposed to be? i do not know much on how to set the timing. it was slow to crank like the timing still needs adjusted. when i changed the oil last time the oil was still alittle dark, when i changed it this time it was clean as a whistle. :rofl2:Funny story my nephew got in it to try and crank it he "accidentally" slapped it in reverse and ran it into the shed, no harm there was a pile of tires and a bike behind it. that thing has power, it scarred the hell out of him. Thanks alot for all the help!

It must just have been the picture but that residue in the pan and the stuff on the bearing cap looked like metal specs to me. Does your oil look like metalic paint when you pull it out?
