Hi All, My son and I just bought his first project car. This is going to be a father / son project until he gets his license. The car is a 65 Mercury Comet Caliente 2 door sedan. Its a Calif car with no rust, small v8, auto trans (c4), and power steering. My first question is how do i identify the engine? The VIN no. said it is supposed to be 289, but the seller said it now has a 302. The power Steering valve is damaged. The stud coming out of the valve assy. was still in the pitman arm, but it has come out of the valve. was it supposed to?? Is there a trick to get the ignition lock out without the key? (we didn't get the key when we got the car) Were the door locks keyed the same as the ignition lock? I'll probably have more questions later Thanks for your help Arnie arnie123@hotmail.com
The steering valve is probably toast but it should be the same set up as a 65 Mustang. So parts are easy to get. A good locksmith can make you a key. They just insert a blank, wiggle it some, look at the marks, file, and before you know it, you have a key. HAd it done many times. If the car is stock, the doors will be the same as the ignition.
As for the engine, it is true that there is V8 302CI, but is possible be that in these years there was not the same. I am quite new, I do not know enough these models... We wait for the verdict of the specialists... :bananaman
I think you will find that the door key and the ign key are diff. the door key should be round ,while the ign key is sorta rectangular.
Trunk key is round/oval. Key for the doors and ignition are the same, squarish/rectangular. My grandpa and I had a rather long debate about this a few weeks ago while going through his 300+ keys trying to find the right one to get into an old '71 LTD he has. Anything with a lock that he has ever owned, he still has a key to it, and all the rings are daisy chained together into one gigantic, heavy pile of keys. Proved him wrong when I found the door/ignition key and showed him it didn't fit the trunk. Of course for us, it's more about the the fun of the debate rather then the actual subject matter.
I was waiting for someone to bring up the fact that the car is a 1965, and the keys were different back then. But I remember the ignition keys of that era being more square. The trunk key was more round. Much like our cars, but different keys completely. And I agree with Dennis on pursuing a 65 stang for the steering valve.
