Suggestions on how I can get these bolts loosened? I sprayed with WD-4 in absence of luquid wrench. but they won't budge, . Whoever had this motor before me rounded the bolts enough that the socket won't grip it. Do I have to remove the head? There are a couple of bolts like this. I don't want to screw something up worse.
If they are so bad that you cant bang a 6 point socket on them with a hammer and crack em loose.Cut the heads off the offending bolts then remove the manifolds.you will now have enough meat to use a pair of vise grips or weld/braze a nut onto the remenants and turn them out.Good luck.
What can I cut them loose with i can't get in there it is recessed, do i use a cold chisel? I don't want to screw up the head
the chraftsmen easy-out damaged nut/ bolt remover set is a really good investment. they look like sockets but you use an open end wrench to turn them and they dig into the head of the bolt the 5pc starter set was on sale at my local sears for 15 a few months ago. WELL worth it. i'd give those a try 1st
There are special sockets available to removed damaged bolts. You can get them at Sears. Also keep soaking them with PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench.
sounds like a stop to Sears will be a good Idea on the way home! I need a new socket wrench anyway , I woud really like to know where those things go? they mysteriously dissappear!
Well if you cant get to em with a cut off wheel then you are going to have to try and hammer a socket onto them that will bite into em and be snug. Then useing the longest wrench you have or a breaker bar try and crack em loose. They should move but you need to make sure the socket grabs hold really well.If you do have access to a cut off wheel you can cut a groove in the bolt heads and stick a big ugly screw driver in the slot you made(put a pair of vise grips on the screw drivers shaft so you have some leverage) and try and turm em out like big ugly screws.Or gring a deef enough groove in the heads so you can knock em off with a cold chisle(just dont crack the exh/manifolds if you plan to re-use em.Or you can spend some dough and buy a set of sockets designed for removing stripped bolts.I believe craftsman sells a set called..."Bolt-out" They are meant for just this purpose.Hope this helps you out.
Yeah I will.. FYI manifolds baaaaad. Headers GOOOOD sooo. not worried about the manifold plus I have another motor I could swipe one off of if I had too
doubt those manifolds would fit anyway. and theyre probably not worth anything so i wouldnt worry too much about messing them up good luck!

PB BLASTER!!!!!!!. i had the same situation with a 69 impala manifold and a wise old timer at a car show showed me how uninformed i was. he walked up and sprayed the bolts while they were still warm, wailted about 10 minutes then grabbed a wrench and they turned right out. could not believe it. i never am without a can now. the craftsman bolt extractor is good too but i would still soak it down with p.b first.
being able to warm it up like that also gets things loose. obviously he cant run the car but a decent heat source would do about the same
