the scissor truss gives you the same effect, I am going to us these over the lift bay and the garage door guys will install its door to follow the roof line. Robert
What LBF said. I have a 50X32 and it is full and unfinished. hmmm, maybe you can build too big. I have had mine up for 4 yrs and it is still not finished, trying to remedy that now. I can't offer any advice on construction as mine is built differently than you are doing but....Why not add a couple more rows of block added and get straight trusses with a storage space made into the center. My have a starge space that is 8' wide and 6' 4" tunnel that go the 50' length of the building. Truss manufacture said it would hold anything you could put in the living room of a house.
I had thought about overhead storage, I currently have a 24x24 garage next to this one that I am going to store all my spare parts in. as soon as I get the new one completed I have about 4 cars that will be totally stripped and sent to the great crusher in the sky. Robert
I had several people tell me to tear down the old one and just build a bigger one or just add onto it, but the way my property and house sits it wasnt going to be easy to do, so I oppted to build a seperate one behind the old one. Robert
started laying block at 10:30 today....unless it starts to rain they will have the block all laid. monday will be rock, then tuesday will be the concrete floor..then it is all up to me and the friends I can talk into helping me build the rest of it. I'll post a few pics later this evening. Robert
My Garage Good luck getting your friends to help! A few years ago I helped a "Boss" set the trusses on his garage. And no, it didn't do me any good... Pics of my own attempt at a garage are here: http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=14053779&uid=4284603
NICE....... you've got lots more money than I do. you got at least 10k just in the floor. Here is a picture of what we got done today. Robert
Money $10K wouldn't have paid for the overhead doors, unfortunately. I sold my house to build it - something that I wouldn't recommend - and in the current economy I am having a difficult time selling the rest of the 5-acre lots I split off of the land I bought to build on. I work a lot of overtime.
It looks like it is big enough to hold a decent machine shop, a hoist or two, and store a few of your nicer cars in. I don't see a place to attach the overhead crane though. You going to be stuck using a cherry picker.
Well it is time to make the big discision...how tall to make the walls. I have been tring to calculate up the costs vs. the advantage and I think that the better setup for me is 10ft walls with a sicssor trusses over the 2-post lift and regular trusses over the rest of the building. If I go with a 6:12 pitch I will gain about 45 inches in the center. This will give me less area to heat and cool. going to put 4 3'x3' windows on the back and I am looking at a 24" wall mounted fan with louvers to be mounted dead center of the garage. Robert
I guess you can always add a traveling hoist later... Even at 10 feet it is going to be low. I have a hoist that goes across my garage but that is because I don't have room for a traveling hoist with 7 foot walls. I can use it to pull an engine but I have to push the car back out of the way so I can put the engine on the floor or my engine stand. The next garage will have 12 foot walls and a traveling hoist. I am thinking about a four post lift. That way I can use it for tires, transmissions, and exhaust systems. I can lift with the tires or frame, depending on what needs attention.
