I have a thin flat putty knife, for removal, but what I need to know is, the arm rest, does it need to come off. Its a 71 Comet. If so, what size bolt is it. I do not want to ruin my excellent door panels. Then, if I do have to remove said armrest which way is the putty knife supposed to go. Up and towards the inside of the car or down and towards the inside of the car. I need to fix my window regulator. Thanks for the help in advance.
You have to remove the arm rest, door handle and window crank. Then check out this thread: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=3150&highlight=removing+door+panels
I just took the arm rests off my '72 Mav, the (2 screws per side) have 3/8" heads. Be aware you'll prolly lose the socket inside the arm rest at least once before you're done. The foam is pretty "clingy" and the holes are rather small. 1/4" drive stuff helps, but you might want to tape the socket to the extension anyways... Russ
Definitely the best way. You can retrieve the socket once the arm rest is all the way off but it's much better if you never lose it in the first place.
Ha! Figured out a solution. Four pieces of 1/2" hard copper each 2 1/2" long. Ream each end good and shove it up into the foam being sure to clear out anything stuck inside. Now the driver will not only come back out, but it self-centers on the bolt head. Russ
You got way too much time on your hands. A 3/8 nutdriver works perfect and there is no socket to lose. I realize that maybe everyone doesn't have a set of nutdrivers in their toolbox but very worthwhile investing into. Only 5-10 bucks and can be used for lots of other projects too.
Didn't I tell you Ray, I'm retired. I have nothing but time. I am so bored, when I'm not working on or driving the Comet. The wife works, and I do the chores around the house except clean the bathroom. I don't know why I hate the bathroom. Anyways, I took off the panel and it fell apart, and the plastic portion of the armrest split in two. My upholstry guy is going to love my check.
Yeah, I could have made an hour-long 35 mile roundtrip to Home Depot for a nutdriver. But being a hotrodder, I'd rather spend 15 minutes in my scrap bin improvising a permanent solution. Now, no matter what tool is used (providing it fits inside the sleeve), the tool will come out in one piece. Next time I'm in H.D. I'll try to remember to snag those nut drivers... Russ
door panel The part I am not understanding is the bezel for the door handle. I don't see any bolts or screws and can't get the panel over this. HELP Vic
The bezel can be taken out by prying the little plastic cup inside to the front and then it will be able to be worked out and there is a screw behind it that holds bezel in.
