Has anyone noticed that the rattle can spray paints, just don't dry like they used to? I've got to believe that it's due to EPA regulations banning the good high volatile solvents. I live in Arizona and painted some parts today and they are still tacky 4 hours later. It doesn't seem to be any different with different brands either, I had the same results with both Krylon and Rustoleum.
Yup... we had a cold spring here, and the paint WON'T DRY when it's cold & damp out... I found blacks to take 6 hrs or longer when it used to be 4 hours in warm weather and a breeze...but colours take even longer... especially the red I'm using on my car... everything I painted this spring has to be re-done because I had to move the parts inside before they got damp, or insects and dust got stuck on em before they dried... good ol' toxic solvents made better paint dispersal
the...Dupont Brand...i use dries really fast. i can spray one side and in 2 mins. flip the part and paint the other side... I get it at my ...Paint Supply Store... i use it to paint the...AOD Crossmembers...i sell... ...Frank :Handshake
I worked as a Sherwin-Williams rep about 8 years ago. Krylon is one of their brands. At that time there was a huge difference in drying time between them and Rustoleum. Krylon was fast and Rustoleum too forever. Makes me wonder if they changed Krylon since then. I still have some old stock here. Might do a comparision. On a recent household project, I used some Krylon water-based spray enamel. Does not spray well at all, even after cleaning the tip with solvent. I gave it a full day to dry between coats too. You can not get a smooth spray out of it, it ends up "pebbled".
I've found the best spary paint ever, it's made by Seymour, you can order it online, awesome stuff, and SEM is great stuff too.
MNTony, reminds me of when I bought a Pinto (God forbid I mention one of those on here) and it was just painted. I was washing it one day, and looked down low, and there is a spider sticking up in the paint. Real professional job. Not a real small spider either. Needless to say, I didn't press very hard in that area. Jack
I've gotta laugh Jack, the first car that my buddies and I painted (my car way back around 1980) we did it outside at about 2am. We were having Car Craft come to Phoenix and I wanted the car painted in case they saw us or took a picture. Anyway, we had all these spot lights on the car and we just finished spraying it when this large moth does a back flip right into the center of the wet passenger side door and got stuck! My buddies still laugh and talk about that night! Barely had enough paint to finish and the hood had stripes in the correct light. And not to kill the bug theme (pun intended!)...but the first motor I rebuilt, i dropped it in (once again after midnight). I didn't have the intake on it because it was a cast iron 429 and it was heavy enough. Had the trouble light hooked to the hood and here comes the moth...right down into the lifter valley and into the engine! I stressed about that one until we fired it up and changed the oil. Turns out bugs are biodegradable...who'da thought?! Some time ask me about the I hear oil story...almost as funny!
I get "Brite Touch" black from Auto Zone and it seems to be the best drying gloss black I've found. Holds up pretty well too. I haven't found a flat or satin black that behaves as well as that does though.
