yes i recently got a 71 mav. but the fuel gauge doesnt seem to work any ideas y? or what can i do to fix the problem
Disconnect the wires at the tank. With the key on ground the wire. Does it move? With the wire dangling turn the key on does the gauge move? if the answer to both questions is no then you need to replace the voltage regulator behind the dash (the fuel and temp gauge should both NOT work.) If the gauge moves in either of the two tests then the sender is bad and you will need to replace it.
I just went through some Fuel Gauge troubleshooting. What do you mean by not working at all? Is it always to the far left ... below E? Like Paul said above .. Pop the harness off the Fuel sending unit, unbend a paperclip and insert one end into each connector on the harness. This will be 0 resistance and your needle should jump to far Right above F with key on. If that works you know the gauge is working. To check the regulator use a multimeter on the harness ... the voltage should jump all over the place .. that means regulator is working. Check resistance between pins on the sending unit while you have the harness off. It should be somewhere between 78 ohms (empty) to 10 ohms (full). Good luck ..
i tried the paper clip in the connector but the needle didnt move to f or nothing it just stayed below the E. So what do you guys think it is?
Now you need to check the voltage with a multimeter ... same place you put the paperclip. Oh ... and you did have the key to ON when you checked it right?
