Hello peoples, I'm lookin at stuffing that 2bbl on my 6 cyl. again... need a scoop and I'm not sure the OEM scoops are tall enough... also lookin at the Boss big block scoop. I've seen a few posts here, and found some crude diagrams on the web... does or can anyone get the full dimensions of the original Comet hood scoop? Also placement since my carb will be offset... looks like the scoop is placed 1 1/2" from the back of the hood, I'd like to know the height and width of the front of the scoop as well as the back. Thanks to anyone that can help! PS... an "aerial" picture of your scoop would be awesome too... I'm eventually going with a 4bbl V-8 and I only want to hack one hole in the hood. Ciao WHiskeee
Everything that I have seen on them indicates that the stock ones are 3 inches tall at the opening. I currently have a mid-80s Mustang GT scoop on mine and it is just 2 inches tall at the opening.
on a 2bbl 250 the carb was soo far off to the side that it was just under the scoop bu a hair, not enough for any kind of open element filter ti sit up in the scoop. the scoop its self really didnt opper much hood clearence. either way your going to need a droped aircleaner or run a cold air intake like they sell in the ricer aisle the only other option would be to put the scoop off center (which would look horrible IMO) or get a wider scoop that can be centered on the hood but extends far enough to the side to go above the 2bbl and leave enough clearence to get a nice filter under it i rna a 2bbl 250 with a comet GT hood scoop and a 14'' hole cut under it and these were the issues i had. sorry i dont have the scoop measurments on hand but check back tomorrow if someone doesnt get them up sooner. i cant gaurentee that my scoop was as far foward on the hood as it would be on a stock Comet GT but its definatly in the center. the hood was designed and cut out for a 302 car, not necessarly to stock dimensions
Thanks guys!... I *KNOW* those are issues that have prevented me from installing the 2bbl to date.... that's why I've been "putting it off"... but with the late summer heat I have major vapour lock issues (I drive to and from work daily - 2hrs in traffic). When I park the car (at a store) briefly and come back I can smell gas. I'm also carrying a fire extinguisher now. The Autolite is bigger than the Holley I think, and I need a 1" spacer to clear the valve cover since the throttle shaft is so wide. I made a "small" air box, and am picking up an old Comet hood tomorrow to butcher in case this doesn't work... I'll still have the original hood. My carb is going at LEAST 2" through the hood and I heard the Mustang scoop is 2" but the Cougar Eliminator/Comet scoop is a full 3" at the front. I have a 1" section of phenolic resin countertop (I work at a hospital; it came from the Pathology lab) and looks like I need to put the new carb on ASAP since the 1 barrel is totally crapping out lately. I see the cheapest repro's (Comet/Eliminator) are about $70... anybody know where to get them in Canada?
nice comet hoods are getting hard to find. i wouldnt butcher one thats in nice condition. youll probably regret it later...

What kind? Do you have pics of the setup? There appears to be a pic in your post but I can't get it to come up on my computer. I have the proggressive 2 barrel on my '77 and would like to keep it if I could find a filter setup. I was considering the Comet scoop also. Thanks Cary
