has anyone herd of a high way axle??? thats what the guy called it when i bought the car from him... if so, is their a way so i can change the gears but not the axle??? btw i dont know anything about axles!
I think its time you started reading car mags and books and such, time to get a backround I think. I would think he means that you have highway gears, ie 2.79 or such, as do most of these cars Shaun
so how come a mini van can do a burnout but my maverick cant if its what most cars have??? is it the higher the number, the more power in your axle??? like 4.11 would be better than 3.90???
the ratio doesn't give you any power it just determines the mph at a certain RPM. like a 2.79 gear will rev a normal SB at 2800 rpms at highway speed while a 4.11 will rev the engine to about 3600 rpms at the same highway speed.
The higher the number the less amont of WORK is required from the engine to spin the axle shafts per revolution. It is easier to do a burnout with the higher gear because of the gear ratio. THe higher gear ratio multiplys the power sent to the wheels through the ring and pinion, but will require higher engine rpms to maintain the same speed as it used to with the smaller ratio gears.
Think of a bicycle. If youhave ever shanged the front sprocket on one. The smaller sprocket let you take off faster but you had to peddle really fast to maintian a good speed. THat is like the higher number gear ratio, ie 4.11. Now put a bigger sprocket on the crank and it is harder to take off but youdo not need to peddle as fast to maintian speed. This is like the lower number gear ratio, ie 2.73.
yep, gas hog at cruise to get more power off the line. like peddling the bike faster makes you more tired, burning more gas, lol.
drop your car into a lower gear while driving and fell the improved throttle responce thats pretty much what running deaper gears in the rear axle is going to do for you but watch how high your rpms jump up in compairson to the lower speed at which your moving sacrifice...
Why do you want to change gears ? Are yours noisy? Bad? worn out? What are you trying to do by changing gears?
What are you going to be using the car for? ... primarily street driving? Also ... what motor? ... and what transmission? For anything less than an all-out drag car, a switch to a 3:40 or 3:55 is typically a nice improvement and will retain some gas mileage. One exception would be if you want to swap in an overdrive automatic transmission that has been modified. You might want a higher numerical gear, otherwise the tranny can overheat from too much stall in the convertor, and very low revs at highway speed. The big answer here is that all modifications need to match each other and your overall purposes and goals. Don't get caught up in "if this much is good ... then a lot more will be better" ... it typically isn't.
i just want to do a burnout without holding in the break!!!! AH!!!! im not rich you know!!!, i dont have 500 dollars to spend!!!
You're car is running a 302 right? that should be able to put the power to the ground, my guess is that your trans is funky, I don't car what gear set that rear has, even a stock 302 should be able to light up the right rear in a light car like these if you stand on it. But, why do you want to ruin your tires?
