Does any one know of a kit or a place where theres a nice detailed tutorial of how to do a shock tower relocation??? thanks!!
Here is how I did it. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=32582 I'm not saying if it's wrong or right as it's still on jack stands, but it's one option. I'm assuming that you just want to move them out or did you want to remove them all together? If so, do a search on an MII suspension and you may find what you need. Good luck!
i just want to move them out more. i dont want to remove them all together. o how does ur car drive now??
after all this time you still havent tested it out yet? wow, the thread you showed me early was dated back some months, figure it would of been tested by now. well ill keep researching.
Oh man, I knew that I shouldn't have posted that link. First let me defend myself. Yes the car has been on jack stands for two years. Yes I agree that is a long time. In my defense I am doing this build right and taking my time. My pedigry is a long line of cars that I've built for the last 30 years. I've had 10 second race cars (and if people saw the shock towers on that one you would have a heart attack!), I've had 12 second street cars. All of which were conceved and assembled by me in my meager little garage. This car is meant to be my crowning achievement (for me anyway, and I suspect that a lot of people on this board feel that way about their cars), the fastest and cleanest one that I've ever assembled. It started as a simple swap to a 4 speed that snowballed into a 347 with an 80mm turbo and nitrous (trying to fit a 10 lb potato in a 5 lb sack). In the last two years I've put in not only the liberty shifted trans with a v-gate, but a twin disk clutch, a 9 inch with 35 spline axles and disk brakes all around, caltracs, custom wiring under the hood with a datalogging wide band, a complete boost controlled timing system for the crank trigger, a home built blow through carburator with dual needles and seats, a water to air intercooler system, built the motor from hand picked parts (AFR185's, Performer intake, forged internals, Boss block), created my own alternator and evac brackets, fiberglass bumpers, carbon fiber hood, made my own headers, and moved out the shock towers. I still have to complete the cage, buy a new driveshaft and some rims with the correct offset. I really don't want to add up how much money I have in this thing...but suffice to say that it is a lot, nuff said. And the holdup for completing my car is the two things that holds everyone up...time and money. If anyone is willing to donate either one...come on over...I'll welcome you with open arms. Anyhow with regard to the towers...all that I did was move the tops of the towers out from just above the upper a-arm to the top of the springs. The upper a-arms haven't moved and I suspect that the front end alignment or geometry should not have changed in the least (although a front end alignment is a requirement after doing this type of change). All the welds on the towers are lap welds, welded on both the inside and outside of the towers. I've added a home built montecarlo bar and replaced the sheetmetal tower supports with a similar construction to my monte bar. The spring support still exists on the outside of the tower and the pocket for the spring has done nothing more than tilted towards the outside of the car to create more clearance inside. I got this idea from looking at the late 70's Mustangs and how their towers were built from the factory and some old pro-stock cars that I've seen pictures of with big blocks. This is very similar to how both of those were done. This is also just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt but it was only thrown out there to give her an option as it didn't look like anyone was trying to help. I'm not suggesting that anyone else do it or that it will even work. I'm not a chassis engineer, but just a backyard mechanic that doesn't believe that building a car is black magic. I enjoy building things myself as opposed to buying them (and I'm just plain cheap). I just threw it out there as an option to notching the towers or using a Mustang II swap months ago because I did not like the way that cut towers looked (for my car) and couldn't justify spending all those dollars on the MII parts. Weirdone you are on the right track...do your research. I trust that you will find a suitable answer to your question as you ask peoples opinions, become familiar with the search tool, and learn about the different options available. Good luck and keep us updated!
sorry didnt mean to seem like i can taking a cheap shot at you, i wasnt. Just curious. I know i have time on myside regarding my car and modifying it its just that when the time comes I want to make the rigth decision that will benefit me. This mav will be my daily driver and my race day driver so i want to have the ability to race street to strip and still take it to the coast or for groceries. Thats why im very intrigued with the shock tower relocation. It seems more viable to my situation but i havent seen it tested in daily driving. All the cars i see it with are all drag cars. And seeing how im a college student i dont have the money for MII suspension swap so thats out. Im just curious and looking at all possible options, thanks tho.
No apology needed, we're good. I knew what you were getting at. It's just my sarcastic sense of humor kicking in. It doesn't come across well in writing. You're doing the right thing, do your research and do what you think will work best for you.
