    Ok so,

My car does not have power steering or brakes. I find it very hard to brake the car, its almost dangerous to me how long the car takes to brake. Is it expensive to convert the car to power brakes? I dont mind the steering much, is it required to make one powered if the other is? If not any suggestions to make the car brake better?

I thought 77 comets had power brakes as a standard? Unless they are manual or I'm missing something cause I doubt they have drums.

if it does have power brakes then he probly has a bad booster, check valve, or the vac. line is disconected

I am taking it to Monro since they check the car out for free, but I hope I dont have to put new cylinders and shoes already. That is lie 200 bucks, at least that much when I got that done on my Camaro.

And Ralf I just got into the Comet game so I am not sure what the standard would include but this car is def not power steering or brakes. It kinda sucks actually, not so much the steering as the brakes.

do you know where the master cylinder is?
if you know where it is then is ther a large round thing between it and the back of the engine compartment?

Well when I asked the owner before me why the brakes were so hard when I was test driving it he said that it did not have power brakes or steering. He was a younger kid that did the work on it with his older brother.

well I'm definitely not smug but ignorant? thats debatable. I have a 74 mav with disc brakes in the front and drums in the rear. it felt like the brakes were spongy so last night i bled the brake lines and then took it for a test and it didnt change it so its not air in the lines.
would switching over to power brakes and putting discs in the back help at all?
can someone post a picture or direct me to a picture of the round thing that would tell me if i have power brakes?
What parts do I need to get to make my brakes power brakes?
I was looking in the master cylinder when i bled the lines and noticed that the fluid thats in there is a dark brown, almost black. The fluid that i put in there from autozone is almost clear.
should I drain all the fluid from the lines and flush it and fill it with new fluid or does that even matter?

I have front disk and rear drum backs. One a 74 comet and one 74 mav. Both are converted drum to disk. Neither have power system and they worked great before the change. If you are having brake problems it is not because they are not power.

the problem here is that brakes are a very important part of the car. they are not very complex but rely on every thing being correct. if you have only driven cars with power brakes, a car with manual brakes will feel hard to stop. the black fluid is a sign of being old fluid. its what i would expect to be in a old car. it is a good idea to flush it with new fluid but this is not your problem so dont do it yet. i would recomend picking up some books first so you will know some basics to safely work on your car.

also i would try to find a repair manual for a maverick/comet.
