Jus got hom from pull-apart where i snagged a 87 cougar 5.0 ho. now im ticked!! i have no idea what im going to do with the timing cover difference. or dipstick!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...mmmmm...grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! any other differences you know of?
Easy. Just swap to early model timing cover with the front dipstick provision. Pan is probably a rear sump, you will have to swap it to a front sump to fit a Maverick. You will also need a new oil pump pickup, they are sold new. Distributors interchange with the old points or Duraspark style, but if it's a roller motor, you will need to use the dist gear off of the dist that is in it or an aftermarket bronze gear. Oh, and the hole where the dipstick was in the block can be tapped and a plug screwed in or plugged with silicone. Same thing for the intake, if you want to get rid of the fuel injection and go carb, any 289 or 302 intake will work.
If you've already got a Duraspark distributor, simply tun down to the local parts house and ask for a rebuilt 85 Stang 5.0 HO distributor w/ manual transmission. This is the only appplication with the steel gear and regular duraspark.
you just have to drill out your timing cover the spot for the dipstick is on your cover just not drilled brad
Make sure you use the flexplate from the motor you pulled as it is a 50 oz balance and the firing order will be different from older 302 and while you have the timing chain cover off dont forget to put a fuel pump eccentric on it. Nothing is hard to do. Might as well slap a new timing chain on it while you are at it.
i wish i could swap my original mav parts.... the frt of the block is different than any other 302/5.0 ive messed with. its almost the same as a sn95 5.0l
the retards that pulled the trans off this motor were insane. they rounded off 1 tq converter nut off and made a friggen masacre out of the flexplate and tq converter. i have another one from a 89 f150 5.0 just have tok pull it. the slack in the chain on this this is so ba........ddddd. i have to change it. im gonna put all new gaskets and but a decent set of heads i have from a 90 gt
car was labeled wrong... im sure i looked it up. its mn12/tbird chassis must be like 91 it is a HO, same as in my 94 mustang
What's different about it ? The only change to the front of the blocks were the addition of timing cover locating dowels. To use an older timing cover, just remove the dowels and center the timing cover the old way with the balancer thru the seal with the cover bolts loose.
You can do this when you pull the pan off of your old motor(assuming you have a 302) and change your oil pump pickup tube. (heck while your at it put a new oil pump in) also make sure you get the fuel pump eccentric off of the cam unless you are going for an electric pump. That and you are probably going to have to use all of your old brackets and pulleys so make sure you take a pic with your digital camera so you dont have to sit there for a couple of hours trying to figure where everything connects together... Well I usually have to sit and figure it out when I pull the front of a motor apart because I never remember how anything came off
Pics!! Ok guys, im a TARD. the timing cover is the difference! block is the same!!! Went to my buddies house and he had an older block and timing cover to verify this prob. i have been scrubbing the crap out of this thing too, look at the difference of the timing covers.
