took the car into a ford mechanic today and says my engine is vibrating, not a lot but it will destroy a bearing, he says it might be the fly wheel, but im almost positive i got the 28oz so what else will cause this? i did replace one piston but it was a factory replacement and professional install.

It is caused by a lack of balance.....somewhere

Did you look at the balancer at the front to see if it sliped or spun?

run the casting numbers on the harmonic balancer. youll need both 28oz components if you have a 28 oz crank. Make sure you have them right at both ends or this will cause a vib. If you need a flex or a balancer I have both here and can help you out. good luck. by the way your numbers on your balancer should read D0 or C9 and before this would indicate 1980-1979 and before for 28oz. ford changed to 50 oz after 1981.I beleive it was mid 81 when this happened.

So it looks like you know something I don't. I don't know what motor he has. Is it that there was only a certain engine offered? Are we looking at a 6? Just trying to learn something here...he gave little to go by.

so i found that the motor will shake like hell if its a flywheel or balancer and it only shakes when 2000-2300 rpm. so he thinks the piston is in backwards. so motor is coming out and the fun starts. does the pistion thing sounds right?

Is it in park or N when this happens? Could you do a compression test?

Got me I dont recall putting one in backwards to compare it to. Havent come across a backwards piston in my 22 year career. I did however put a 400 crank in with 351m rods and pistons. That didnt work out so well.:)

Hope it works out for you.

I guess I never heard of a 28 oz crank in a six, so I asumed he had a v-8 with a 28 oz crank. thats where I got my info. Just trying to help the guy with what small knowlege I gained from you guys. Got to share it to keep it (so Im told.) I have also been told that a slipped balancer is very rare but can happen. I would suggest looking for the obvious first. I would make sure you have the right componets first. ie; 28oz crank flex, balancer. Or 50oz flex ,balancer.comppresion check would be a good thing to do for peice of mind on the piston install and for general knowlege of your engine, low cylinder compression will feel like a timing miss and there for cause a studder , what do you know about this engine has it ever been worked on before? The balance problem I had was internal ,I had the right componets but the crank had issues.there was nothing I could do externally. ended up with a grind and spin balance with a total rebuild to correct the situation.
Start with the obvious, make sure you have all the right stuff.

actually yes it is possible to put the piston in backwards. they all have to have the arrows face the same direction, i say that because i know a guy who builds his 302 with all the pistons in backwards on purpouse. however i would check everything you can first to make sure that is the cause before spending the time and money to tear it down. sorry to hear about your vibration.

71 Maverick. Need a little more info:
    1. Will the engine shake in your driveway in N at 2300RPM?
    2. If your driving at 2300 RPM and your car start to vibrate, if you shut the engine off dose it stop shaking?
    3. We need to know if it engine or drive train.
    4. can you give us as much info as you can on the car and engine, wheel and tires, have you replace the U-joint, can you fell the car shaking or was it just the Ford guy,2000-2300 is a very small range. It and old Super Stock trick install the piston in backwardon the rods.We use this set-up in are 65 289 that we run in open track. Idle at 1100 thru 7200 rpm with no shaking.

if the new piston was not weighed and matched to the weight of the old piston then it could difintly cause a vibration. that was the first thing i suspected from your description. there are lots of things that could cause a vibration, and the more info and background you can give will help us give the best help.
