Any hints? I'm going to replace the hinges on the driver's door on the mav. The old ones have already been replaired (badly) and I have a replacement set. Before I take the door off, anything I absolutely should or shouldn't do? How about adjusting the height to make it latch correctly? Any help would be appreciated.

The best way is to remove the inner fender panel, leave the door closed, and change them one at a time.

well, couldn't figure out how to do that, so I just decided to put the jack under the door, and change the hinges one at a time. Little did I know that when you unbolt the top hinge from the car frame, the little plate it bolts into was going to just fall down inside. Great. Apparently the clips that hold it in place didn't. Finally just took the door off to give me more room, and after many tries, maneuvered that piece back in place, and got one end in the clip. The other clip is missing. Got it all put back together. Figured I'd have to fool with the adjustment, to get it to latch correctly. Got it right first try. Shuts easily, latches correctly, and the door lock now works. yeah! She's been afraid someone would steal her stereo, since we couldn't lock it. Now, to get the motor and transmission in . . . . .

Congrats! Great job. I hate it when that plate falls down. :Handshake

another tip if you have any or can go get some carb extender bolts (no head)-
    1 end fine thread
    1 end course
You can remove 1 of the hinge bolts, then thread the carb ext. in its place, this will allow you to pull the hinge off and it will hold the backing plate.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys. I just wasn't prepared for the thing to fall down inside. I did remove the kick panel. Found the plate, and saw how the bottom one was held in place. Unfortunately, it was the top one that fell! It sure was a hassle to get it back up there in place, and I had to hold it while my son got one bolt started.

Also found the reason "the stereo doesn't sound like it did, can you fix it or something?" as my daughter said. The speaker on the driver's side is completely blown. :party3:No wonder it doesn't sound right. Probably only rattled, if that even. Guess I'm off to the stereo section to get some ideas. She has speakers in the kickpanels, (I drilled them out) two in the back on the sides (it as cut out when we got it) Thought that would hold her, but maybe not. Thought about adding 6x9's in the rear window, but don't have the added electronics. Her little stereo probably won't handle all that.
