Cant make up my mind if I want mechanical or electrical gauges. Would like to go digital but dont know Pros and cons, give me some input
I personally don't like digital, some of the electronic ones look pretty sweet, I guess you get a pretty good selection with the electric ones.
Electrical are easy. Mechanical you have to fish the temperature probe from where your gauges are into the engine compartment, and also the oil pressure line needs to be connected to the gauge inside the car (these have blown off inside the car blowing oil all over the interior) Plus you can get some pretty cool ones, I got these they glow green at night to match my car.
Mechanical gauges are sometimes difficult to plumb, depending on the application. For a nice driver, I would go electrical for most circumstances. What specific gauges are you looking to replace/add? Oil press, coolant temp, volts, amps, fuel press, tach, mph...?
Gauges I want are oil pressure-water temp-volts-tranny temp. I know about plumbing the mechanical, done it a few times(never use the plastic oil pressure hose) I am more concerned with the accuracy and durability of electrical. Digital is very nice but very expensive, not that any quality guage is cheap, I have been looking at the Autometer Cobalt series of guages cause they glow blue, same color as my car.
I am having a hard time finding the Trans one. I shoulda started looking for that one first so that I would know which maker I would be choosing from. Seems I can find the oil, temp and volts easily from anyone, but the Equus I can't.
I would think that if you are considering digital gauges then the decision over electric or mechanical is already answered.
those autometer cobalt series look good! after i get my tranny built i'm gonna save up for a couple years and get those lol!
i can see what you mean... however if its done right they look really nice... the Dakota Dig. guages Frank (71gold) has in his 73 look great in person IMO but as far as mechanical goes... too much to run inside the car.... with electrical its just wires... my vote is electrical
I switched from electrical to mechanical and have almost a brand new set of autometer electrical if interested. I think I have Oil (mechanical) Water temp (electrical) Volt (electrical) and I may have a tranny (electrical) and I know I have a tranny (mech) also. Black faced and I "think" they are the 2 1/16" sport comp. I can check tonight if interested.
I like electrical gauges for the ease of installation and selection. Some of the digital stuff I like and some I dont. Just depends on which one.
I agree with the easier installation of the electrical. I always felt better with knowing the mechanical are there. For some reason I feel that they may be a bit more accurate. I had a water temp gauge at one time that autometer had sent me the wrong sending unit. After a new radiator, electric fan (both of which I did need eventualy) I learned that the electrical sending unit was reading 25* high!
