I got my parts in so it's time to change this dang fuel sender that's been faulty for so long. I bet there is a hangup somewhere on the unit itself, maybe I won't even need to replace it. I guess I'll know after I pull it out. Here are the pics of the part I got from AK:
Oh My!! It looks super nice!! when you get your old one out, take a picture of them side by side, please....
Omg!!! I was under the car for 1 hour just letting the gas drain out. What the heck, there was like 6 gallons in there and I thought I was empty. Then I got to install the new one after I got the old sending unit out and I couldn't get the rubber ring on to sit right. I spend another 1.5hrs trying to get it to seat properly and then I thought I had it. Then pour gas in and it started leaking. What a killer job! Gonna go back later and try it again.
Use axle grease to hold the gasket in place will help some. Removing the tank will help a lot better.
I might try removing the tank because it's an awkward position laying on the ground trying to change it. How do I remove the tank?
disconect the filler hose in the trunk. it will be dryed out and hard so you may want toget a replacement one. disconect the vent line hose on the top front left of the tank. undo the two straps with the tank suported. then drop it down, trying not to get gas all over you and not on your head.
i honestly dont know. i would try a napa. they are more likely to have it. also theres a mustang auto on el cajon blvd. (619)440-1969. they may have it also.
Really got to watch the fit of aftermarket senders etc. Sometimes the new lock rings are slightly different. Compare it to the old one.
When I installed a new one on my grabber I had the same problem. (It was from Auto Krafters as well). Took a couple of attempts so I was glad I bought a couple extra o-ring gaskets. I used petroleum jelly on the rubber o-ring to hold it in place. I ended up taking the tank off to get it in. I reused the same rubber hose to the filler tube. Nothing leaked so I guess it worked ok. Good Luck with it! Jerry
So I actually went back and just tightened the top lock ring up and no leaks. So I guess I didn't have to drop the tank afterall. The toughest parts was getting the rubber ring seal to not move when putting the new fuel sender on. There are 2 tabs on the inside that need to line up in order for the fuel sender to seat properly, that takes a little fiddling. I hooked up the wires and the fuel reads all the way full with 17 gallons of gas in there...sweet! Thanks to everyone for the help.
