    Hey guys,
You guys have been great! What do you recommend for a new carb and intake? right now it is a 73 Comet 302 with 50K miles stock? i think it is a 2 barrell now but wanted to get your take on a good combination for power and clean running.

As an added note i am in Denver so need to compensate for altitude.

Edelbrock performer or Weiand 8011 intake
keep your carb 600 cfm or less (less probably better w/stock motor-think around 570/535 cfm or so). A good dual exhaust should be next up if you don't already have one.

I run an Edebrock 1406 (600 cfm) carb on an ancient Holley Street Dominator intake with duals, runs great right now, and should be even better when I swap to a weiand stealth intake. I love how easy this carb is to tune and work on. My only gripe is that they used basically all Torx fasteners on it, and I REALLY hate torx fasteners, but it's nothing that should keep you from buying one. Pick up the 1487 Calibration kit with it so you can really make it suit your car.

Ford A321, Edelbrock F4B, Performer RPM, Weiand Stealth, take your pick, they'll all work with what you have now and allow future upgrades. Carb? Holley 570 Street Avenger. Or if you want cheap and easy, just replace the factory 2 bbl with a Holley 500 2bbl carb. That alone will net you 20 hp. Advance the timing about 8 degrees over stock, that'll net you another 10-20hp.

Damn that's what I am talking about! Is there a place on the forum to get all the info on my motor, like comression, cam, etc

73 302 is going to be a lo-po motor. Low compression (8 to 1) small flat tappet cammed. Want to wake it up? Swap the cam for a Comp 268H, then add the intake, carb and headers. But first, before ordering or buying any parts, you need to find out what pistons are actually in it. And if it's actually a 73 year spec'd engine, at this point in time it could have any number of parts combinations in it.

very true, i know it was my grandmothers car and she bought it brand new and it only has 50K miles :thumbs2:

but yeah i want to wake it up it seems like a solid motor for sure need to add some goodies and see how she runs after i get some aftermarket parts on old Betsy!

also is there a location where there is vacuum diagrams or wiring? i was playing in the engine compartment and saw a bunch of hoses unplugged and and wires just hanging there? not sure where they go no where obvious

With a 73, there's only two vacuum hoses needed for the engine/transmission operation. One from the carb to the vacuum advance pod (front nipple, nearest to the radiator) the other from the back of the intake to the transmission (automatic only) plus the PCV system, big hose running from the rear of the carb to the passengers side valve cover. If you have other accessories, like A/C, then someone else can point out what's needed there. If it was your Grandma's car and you know no one's ever been into the engine, then it's a safe bet it's all original. You will want to replace all the gaskets in the engine though, these will start leakin once you start to put it though it's paces after it's long snooze.

Wasn't the cam timing backed up several degrees on those engines like the 460 were for emissions? If so I would had a rollter timing gear set on top of my list.
I would go with any of the intakes listed above but I would go with a 390-450 Holley Based carb.
This is one of those areas where it is split down the middle about Holley and Edelbrocks. You'll hear both listed. Just personal preference on most part.
I would then add some headers of choice and duel exhaust with some Hooker Aero-Chamber mufflers for a great kick in the pants and great sound.
    That is my 2 cents

The stock cam is so small that you'll gain little or nothing by changing the cam timing.

    very interesting, thanks guys!

yeah i am stupid when it comes to carbs... my new issue is i have a dead spot (dont know what else to call it) right when i start to take off...

    Example:

I am at a stop light and as i start to add gas it stumbles at a very low RPM...then after the stumble it picks up and goes?

I am at a stop light and i stomp on the gas it will either die or take of like a bad-out of hell!

I wouldnt care but i almost got T-Boned this morning pulling out into an intersection adn the car died i was like FFUUUUUUUUU and slammed her into neutral and started it and then into drive and floored it! ha ha ha:yahoo::biglaugh:

first thought is the accelorator pump is not working right. second thought is the idle mixture screws are to far out making it too rich.
