VIN Sequence number... how close is your car to someone else's???

so when do they do this...

the VIN being under the fender where it bolts to .

 

They stamp it during the manufacturing process?

 

Looks like the stamper was having a little too much fun that day!

 

Those weren't done by the same guy.

Two different "fonts" of stamps.

I wonder if the car came back across the line for an added option and the 2nd guy re-stamped it.

 

I didnt even see the second set of stamps...I was just looking at the little picture

VIN numbers were not back to back on the assembly line. When a car was ordered, it was assigned a VIN number. Very possible they could have been days and even weeks apart on the assembly line.



The VIN was not assigned when ordered at the dealer. Did not get a VIN number until the factory received the order and produced a buck tag and a build sheet just to clarify.

 

im going to go thru some of my other vin's and cars to see if any of them are close as well.

 

...so the car wasn't built untill ordered...they didn't produce any of them to ship... when ordered?

 

These 2 '76 Cougars were one number off from each other, both bought at the same dealer the same day. Being that both are the same color I'm willing to bet they rolled off the line together.

 

VIN is stamped into the body as it rolls down the line. My guess....car was mis-stamped and had to be re-stamped when the mistake was discovered.

 

Correct...no cars were built until ordered. Most cars were ordered just for general "stock" for the dealership. All cars on the assembly line have a destination and a build sheet before the first weld is made on the first part.

 

That makes sense, the upper stamp has "V" on both sides, probably means "void"
