i took the air conditioner out of a 74 mav 302 v8. i know it saves gas mileage and gives me more power, but how much gas mileage does it actually save me.
Without the ac on it doesn't use much power to turn the pulley.probly gained more in milage from the weight loss.
I dont know what kind of fuel mileage you get but with no power steering and no a/c my car got 20-21 mpg on an highway trip with 302/c4 only modification that may have an effect are fiberglass hood, no front bumper, and edelbrock 600cfm 4 barrel on performer manifold. I was truly amazed thats the highest mileage ive ever had in a vehicle. I had pizza delivery mobile 89 beretta that didnt even get that. Thats my 2 cents!
well thank you alot and did you put another bumber on or just leave it off because your car looks pretty good
Not sure if it is true, but I have heard that A/C drains 8 hp, so if you are running 110 hp, you may notice an 8%-ish increase in gas mileage. Or about 1-2 mpg.
with a worn out '90 5.0 roller motor, C4 and 3.00 gears my blue car got right around 20mpg whether it was city or highway, no a/c.... but with a fresh '94 5.0, T5 5sp and the same 3.00 gears i get around 17mpg in town and 26+ mpg on the highway, no a/c
26+??? Wow! I was snagging 20 with my old edelbrock, and 14-16 with the double pump holley. Of course, I am running a little rich, and might be able to lean it out for more mpgs, but that is not what my project is all about...
No I never did get a bumper for it and may never do it anyway. I will be doing body stuff next winter so I guess well see what happens then. Right now I'm still waiting on TCI to ship my torque converter so I can see how poor my gas mileage will be with around 400 hp!!! 74Maverik we should hook up sometime this summer since we're in the same area. Maybe go to a Wot-a-dog Monday Cruise-in in New Carlisle. Aloha
never have cared about gas mileage in the mav. gas could be $5 a gallon and i would still drive it. ...........might have to return all those beer cans to afford it though
This is more common than people want to believe. With your T5 in OD your mileage drops because your engine is running in the idle or off-idle circuit in the carb. This is a very rich mixture and uses more gas than you actually need to maintain your speed. In addition to running in the richest mixture area, each time you need to accelerate even just a little the engine speed is so low that you go into the power enrichment circuit and burn even more fuel. The cure is to change the rear end gearing so you get back to about 3.0 overall gearing when in OD. That or switch to fuel injection that allows the engine to tell you what it needs to run properly.
