Hey guys. New to the forum, thanks for the warm welcome on the new members board. Sitting here listening to you guys is giving me the Mav fever again! But, im having to much fun racing circle track right now to stop that. Anyways, heres what im wondering. I have always wanted to build a real nice 347 stroker to put in my '70 2dr mav, with a lil posi and 8 inch and all. I want it to be very streatable but able to lay the smak down on some camaro or mustang that pulls up and wants to play. I have a Ford truck I have customed as well. It is the xlt ext cab step side(came with a 4.2 V6). Well, now the truck has a 5.4 Supercharged lightning drivetrain in it. Has anyone attempted or know any info on trying to put the 5.4 modular engine into a mav? I have heard that on mustangs like the mav you have to do away with the shock towers and convert to coilover. Well, I looked at some sites that are linked on here and saw that coilover kit you can use on stock type control arms and it was interesting. Would something like that work? What kind of issues may I run into with that 5.4 swap? I want to have all functionality out of AC and all that as well. But I really dont have the know how or want to, to chop up the firewall or anything drastic. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!!
the 347 rout is really simple. you can easly build 350 to 450 depending on the parts chosen. also consder what trans you want to use. as for puting the lightning 5.4 in, thats like stuffing 20lbs of something into a 5lb bag. the top end of the 5.4 motor is so much wider and taller that you will have to remove the shock towers entirely. a coil over conversion wont give you enough room. you would also need a really tall cowel hood or scoop.
thanks for the input man. I was assuming that was what I would mostly hear. It would be cool, but my original 347 idea will work wonders as ive seen. I dont know a whole lot about rear end and Ford trans/gears. Ive played with my circle track car some, but thats about it. Like i said, I wanna build a nice higher than average HP 347 Stroker thats not so wild as I cant drive it with the wife and kid to the store, but wild enough to show someone who doesnt know about the MAv culture what he/she is messing with. Do you have any recommendations as to rear ratio(3.73), rear end size(8"), and trans???
forget the 5.4 HOT ROD magazine has a 400 horse 3.5 ecoboost v6 in a slick 34 Ford. its beautifully places in there. thats the new hot swap. gotta go to the news stand and take a look.
that'll work too. but i swear that v6 looks like some sort of mini hemi. and the way they run the exhaust and intake with the turbos out of sight is just ... well i cant find a word to describe it but you better beleive that 400 ponies will get 30 mpg in a maverick
I agree w\ Bryant. The SBF 302-347 is the best route unless money and time is not an issue. There are some guys here doing the mod motor conversion but from what I've seen it's a major project. While ur trying to figure out how to get the mod motor in, u cud be riding and enjoying what u have. Nobody knows what's under ur hood unless u tell them or raise the hood. GUD LUCK .......JMO
to figure out what gearing you want you need to figure what transmission your going to use. do you want a stick shift or an auto. geting a transmission that has an overdrive is the way to go. the popular ones are the t5 and the aod. the t5 is a manual trans that was used in the 5.0 mustangs and other cars. it fits in the maverick nicely. the aod is the auto. its a very popular swap and you can even buy the crossmember for the install from one of the members of this site. for the rear end gears you need to decide on what type of use your going to have. for instance if you going to only dragrace then you will want a numaricly high gear like 4.10s. if you only going to drive on the street then you will want a numaricly low gear like 3.25s or 3.55s.
