I never felt comfortable doing my own welding. I tacked my pieces together for mock-up and then took them to a pro for finish welding. After all this is the suspension and chassis we're playing with here.
And I agree, since I only learned, within the past year, to operate a welder. I did the same thing when I built some parts of my roll over stands - I took it to someone else that had a 220 welder That is why I find myself overbuilding some things. Plus the more I weld, the more confident I become. I could see decent beads when I welded that rear crossmember up. You also get a good sense of the weld from the sound it makes plus the bluish heat marks opposite your welds which will show that you had good heat penetration. All just from practice and learning from others. Now I can get a real welder to come and help me, but not until spring, so I might leave the final Mustang II suspension welding plus knitting the cage solid to him.
what if I just based myself on the picture and do the same setup? what material would I need? like what size metal and tubing? like the coilover mounts that go on the diff I can buy online, but like the frame mounts I can probably (with some practice) fabricate myself then when it comes to the final welding I can take it to a shop so the welds will be done correctly
The flat plate on my kit was 3/16. The round bar was about the same but in diffferent diameters depending on its purpose. Look at chassis engineering for an upper C/O mount kit. Their cheep and and have it figured out already. Get the lower mounts for your rear end at the same time. Then create a template of your frame rails and built those supports out of 3/16 plate.
well what im going to do is cut out templates out of cardboard and measure everything up and take it to my friend that works at a shop called Mazworx, I dont know if you guys have heard of them, pretty big Nissan fab shop. But anyways yeah hes going to just fabricate me all the mounts and all the bars I need. Ill keep you guys updated on here with pictures to see how everything works out. Question is what size coilovers do I go with? Like in length?
oh yeah and where can I find these brackets? like the ones that do to the rear end for the bottom of the coilovers, and the one for the panhard bar? and also the upper and lower control arms I believe they are
not sure. look for controle arm brackets or mounts, pan hard bar mount, lower controle arms. controle arms. i know that site isnt the easyest to use. also look at speedwaymotors site. they have lots of brackety also.
will this be the coilover mounts that go on the rear end where the control arms bolt to and the bottom of the coilover bolts to? http://www.helixsuspension.com/catalog/UWeld-Products/Axle-Brackets/UWSMM37
Those will work but you should look for something with multiple mounting points for the link bars. You will need the adjust-ability. The lower C/O mounts are perfect. Wait till you build the suspension and set ride the height before ordering your coil-overs. This will help ensure you get the correct length.
ok cool, thanks oh yeah and where can I find the link bars? I have looking and looking and still cant find them, where can I find some for a good price?
Check this video that I posted today, in it's own thread, about a completely bolt in Watts Linkage/3 Link system into an Austrailian Falcon http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?p=739546#post739546
Our PT Cruisers and the Durango have a watts link. The durango parts might be an option for some cost cutting.???? Rubber bushing mounted so it might be more streetable???
