I wanted to change my 73 maverick manual brakes to disc brakes and i was wondering what care have interchangeable brake systems
You mentioned Power in the title ... are you asking about master cylinders? I am running a later year Mav manual disc MC... I did not want to add a booster to an already-tight underhood, and you have to change the shock tower brace. You do have to throw some leg at it, but it stops great with the front discs. The pushrod needs to be shortened a bit or your pedal will be high with this combo. If you have power steering, a hydro-boost MC from a newer Mustang could be a really sweet addition to the car ... it uses the power steering pump to also boost the MC, and that whole unit is really nice and compact. A lot of Cobra replica owners use that set-up (very tight footbox area ...)
I mean like taking maverick manual drum brakes and make them power drum brakes what other cars have a power brake system that could be put on the maverick. Also my car has no power steering and i don't plan on adding it on.
I think your biggest gain brake-wise would be to swap to discs on the front.... huge improvement in stopping power. It puts our cars at least able to fend for themselves vs. modern cars. Then, next step would be a booster and MC for a Mav. I know you can at least get the MC from most parts stores with perhaps a 2-3 day wait. The booster might be tough. You will have to switch to a shock tower brace made for the booster. There are small boosters that could be adapted ... I have seen that too, but I am short on details on them. Seriously ... do the discs first. If you have enough leg to throw at the pedal, you won't feel the need for anything else.
What kind of shock towers do you need to install a booster on the car? Are they easy to come by? Or do you have to change them and use the tubular ones like them used on some mustangs?
You just need to get a brace from a power brake car. I dont even run a brace because the stock ones are ugly. Im making a monte carlo bar that will also tie in to the rear brace in the engine compartment.
LOL, I was going to say the same thing, the power booster braces are extremely nerdy in looks. You would probably rather be caught wearing womens underwear than having one of those.
Run a Mopar parts or wilwood master cylinder with a min 1-1/8" piston diameter and 2AN braided stainless hoses you won't need a power booster and you will have much better feel
I've got a stock disc brake master cylinder with stock disc brakes on my 72 Grabber. I wouldn't waste your time with boosting the brakes, it adds more weight to the car, isn't needed to start with, and looks like horse****. There is no difference in the amount of "leg" needed to stop my car versus my everyday driver ranger or F-150 with boosted brakes and more weight to boot. Anybody that claims otherwise likely has the wrong master cylinder, or legs muscles weaker than a toddler.
