I have issue 10 "Mustang Magazine" here with an article about a clay model of a 4 door Mustang completed on January 7, 1963. It says Falcon on the front fender but its clearly a Mustang. Strange but actually nice looking I think. The Mustang wheel base was extended for the 4 doors. The approach was approved for another Ford compact that would debut five years to the day after the Mustang....The Maverick. The four door Maverick was added in 1971, but the idea dated back to at least January 1963. I wonder what else we do not know about the Maverick and the Mustang.

The picture in the magazine is a two page picture page 12 and page 13. I have no idea how to get a picture of any kind on here. I wish I did. This is something I have to learn. This may help. Its a 1964 1/2 Mustang 4 door clay model in silver. It is a larger wheel base but hard to tell. It says Cougar on the front fender just behind the headlamp not Mustang or Falcon but the there is a license plate that does say Falcon. The door window frames and roof line is the same as the 4 door Maverick. The lower half of the doors are Mustang. I remember reading that that the Mustang was to be named after a WWII air plane. But while under development someone drew that horse and the rest is history. The red/white/blue staff was USA. I wonder if there was ever a Maverick name plate on any of the pre production cars.

Theres a lot of neat stuff coming to light about these cars in recent times. A while back Dave posted some 60s paperwork that had the maverick with the falcon nameplate on it.

That 4 door Mustang, looks nothing like a Maverick, the roof line isn't even close. It's ugly!!
