I was taking my car apart and I took out my charcoal canister out I was just wondering if they are worth any thing really
Put it back on! It absorbs fuel vapors from your gas tank.Without it,and the line plugged, you can build up a lot of pressure in your gas tank! It was one of the very few emissions devices that could actually help your gas mileage by burning the stored fuel vapors!
Listen to "simple man" the charcoal canister (along the the PCV valve) is one of the few emissions parts that really do improve things.
Out here in Ontario, I've heard a few guys have been pulled over by either the Ministry, or Environment Canada, even thought they are driving old cars that don't need E-tests. Some guys have been fined for not having them, and not have the proper air cleaners with a connection to the canister. I don't have one on my car, and I've never smelled gas...but I'm thinking of putting one back on, I don't want a ticket.
so the hose thats on it leads to the air cleaner? mine has been disconected for a while and havnt paid it any mind. guess i will try to hook it back up properly.
nope, you're good unless they get contaminated with raw(liquid) fuel or water. the charcoal just absorbs vapors until it's saturated and then when engine is running, they purge into the engine.
Thanks! I was just thinking since charcoal is organic it would decay over time, but then again Wood lasts very long.....
They arent worth much money but they should be. Mine goes on this Spring. Picked up a real nice one restored from Tim. Looks like new. Even has the factory clamps and hose. Cant remember what I paid but it was under 20 bucks anyhow. plus shipping. Should look real nice and I feel much better running the vapors into it and the breather.
I think it suits the cars that shoot for that factory type look. For the guys who dont want the big blue canister just spray it black so its not so noticeable.
