New Member (lurker) and a sprint question

I thinks this is the plan, I could make a clone but by the time I find everything thing I need and put it together I bet I would be deeper into it than if I just held out. Plus I would always know that it wasn't a true sprint.

Perfect, now that I have permission I'll definitely be there. Just look for a tall skinny guy with a wife and kids in tow.

Thanks for the help. I don't think I am at the point of cold-calling owners and asking to buy (that could change though). Besides, there goes all the negotiation power I have. I think I am comfortable just doing a fairly active search for what's for sale and getting ready to pull the trigger once something pops up.

Not really, a sprint doesn't have any extra parts that regular mavericks wont have. Except for the graphics(which you can buy).

But of course a true sprint will always be worth more, but then again if something ever happens to a clone its just a regular maverick so no big loss. Compared to loosing a real sprint.

Welcome aboard from a Sprint owner! There are several Sprint owners around so you never know unless you ask. I had considered selling mine but can never bring myself to do it. Good luck on your hunt...and if I change my mind again I'll advertise it.

hey guys just wanted to thank those who put on the roundup. My family and I really enjoyed it and I loved seeing the two sprints as well as the other cars.

I took some pictures and sent them to my parents and they loved the trip down memory lane. When my mom saw the pictures she mentioned that her sprint had a blue vinyl top. I asked her to send me a picture and sure enough its a sprint with a blue vinyl top that looks a bit darker than the blue on the body.

I looked through all the threads and search google images but only found 1 or 2 other vinyl top sprints. Does anybody know anything about this? Its not mentioned in any of the promotional materials I can find on the web.

Yes...I have seen other Sprints with a vinyl top....but only on here. Very rare I would say.

Here are some pics of the Sprint I bought on Saturday in California. Its an original 302 and has been largely unmolested for better or worse. It shows 86,000 on the clock so that may be the original mileage but the interior is in pretty rough shape. It had a grabber hood on it but since I am shipping it back I could only take one hood so I had the seller put the original hood back on.
In the picture it looks like there is some rust on the hood but it is actually two small holes punched in the lip with very little rust at all. Overall I thought it was in pretty good shape, body-wise, the floor pans and panels look rust free but there was some damage on the passenger side. It looks like someone sideswiped something and did a poor repair job at some point. It drives great, I drove it for 2 hours on the freeway in 100 degree weather and was amazed at how straight and smooth it drove. My plans for it once it gets here in a couple of weeks are

1. replace the flag decals on the rear and clean up the inside
2. the turn signals don't work at all, the seller said he said he tried to figure it out but was unable to. Once it gets here I'll look it over but any ideas would be appreciated.
3. drive it and enjoy it
4. I need to to a power brake install. Reading old posts, it looks like the best way is to find a 75-77 mav and do a direct swap.
5. Since i have to modify the firewall for the brake install, this is when I'll start replacing the interior. I am going to keep the bench seats but I might replace and then recover the front one since the cushion itself is in pretty rough shape
6. Eventually work on the exterior

Good call on choosing the original Sprint hood, and having it put back on. I would have done the same.

Craig did a great tech article writeup on modifying your car for power boosted front disc brakes, and you will find all of the info you need on here.

Good call on having the interior re-upholstered. There's something special about the way the Ford designers, designed the paint and fabric scheme on the Sprints. They look awesome, from the vantage point of standing in front of the center of car, and looking down the hood stripes, and seeing how the front and back upholstery matches perfectly with the lines.

yeah I had to think about it for a while. But I think I want it to look original. On the plus side I would check the Bakersfield craigslist for a grabber hood

 

Nice car. For what its worth, I did the manual 11" disk swap. Also thought I might want power but after doing the swap, manual is fine. No need for power IMO.

 

I understand too, I'm just fond of the Grabber hood.

 

Car looks to be a solid foundation and its all there to boot (big plus) Glad you found such a nice one to play with...Enjoy man!!!

PS: Power brakes...Not really necessary, if you simply do a disc brake swap. You will be very happy with the results. I shoulda let you drive mine when you were at the round up.

 

I would have to agree....and I have DONE the swap. Manual disc brakes will get you 90% better brakes than drums. Power disc brakes are only 10% better than manual disc brakes.
