For DDB's sake, I'll say it. Yes, I'm new. lol Moving on... Got my heads on (Yaay). Do I need to prime my lifters, or the engine as a whole at somepoint? The bottom half is all new, the heads are used. Thanks!
Prime the lifters...Prime the engine right before initial start up as well...Spin the oil pump till you get oil at all 16 pushrods/rockers...
uhh... all I used was oil on the pushrods So just priming the whole thing just before startup is fine? I can go ahead and put the intake on?
Everything you would ever need to know, can be found here: http://sbftech.com/ Pretty much, instantly.
oh, wait. Does this mean I should prime the lifters a certain way now and then prime the engine as a whole later?
Nope, but everything you ask could be answered with a little reading. In the old days, that's what we had to do.
So if you don't want to answer it, then don't answer it... Don't see what makes you think preaching to me about reading in the old days will accomplish. It's a rude and condescending implication. Been reading plenty on here. And if I can't find a definite answer here or on google, I ask. What's wrong with that? I feel like I should check with you before posting a question to make sure its not beneath you.. That's not right. Maybe this link would've been more helpful to post: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=52588&highlight=prime+lifters Thanks to the people that have been helping me understand this stuff!
If you read that, it says that, I soak mine. seems simple. You just proved that the "Search" function would answer most of your questions, that's what its for.
DDB, And again you're implying that I didn't use it first, and that I just mindlessly, or lazily, start threads asking every question that comes to mind. Get lost dude. I don't need ur insults when I'm trying to figure this stuff out
yea.. sometimes it's just hard to find stuff too haha! Or you find a bunch of stuff, but just aren't sure. Thanks again!
I primed the lifters by submerging them in oil and pressing on the plungers several times till no bubbles came out. Then, just before you install the distributor, DUCT TAPE a 1/4" socket to a long extension to use in priming the whole engine. Put the extension in a reversible drill, put the socket on the end of the oil pump shaft, and run the drill backwards to prime the engine. You'll know when most of the air is out of the oil passages 'cause the drill will begin to labor. TAPE IS IMPORTANT!!! My socket fell off and dropped down in the oil pan. Had to remove the pan to get it out.
You could of just left it there and it might have gone its entire life without ever causing a problem. Or you could have hit a speed bump with hot oil and bounced it up into the crank, wedged it against a rod and hand grenaded the whole thing. It's a fun gamble I once tore down an engine in a Mav I bought to find a 13mm socket in the pan. The worrisome part is there wasn't a single metric bolt on that engine.
