first car project ever... need a start

hi guys, this is my first post here.
very nice community and very helpful information i found so far.

i have a 2010 G37 sedan for daily driver and i work from home so i needed a project to have some fun with.

recently, i bought a 73 maverick 302 from a girl that wanted to get rid of it. she had it for $2500 but i got it for a $1000 after a little bit of negotiating.

the interior seems in excellent shape and so does the engine. the body has few small dents and bumps every here and there. i have not seen any rust so far but i will be doing a rust inspection as soon as i get a chance.

anyway, i need some help from where to start. i want to add a turbo charger after i fix the body and get some rims. but i don't know which to start first.

1. where can i get a small for front bumper and a grille as mine is one of those big silver one with rubber and no grille.

2. where can i get a rear bumper, again it has the big silver metal piece.

Wow sounds great, from your description you have a 74 model year car instead of the 73, the 73's had a small back bumper and an intermediate sized front bumper.

If you look through the classified area there are a few small bumpers for sale.

Bro ..Im gonna be in Vegas on Bussiness from 10/10 to 10/14. Ive got a small rear bumper from a 71. I can bring it up if your anywhere near. Just buy dinner and you can have it.Just kidding you can have the bumper for free.

as for it being a 74, it's not, it's a 73 as it says on the title.

i'll post some pics to see if it really is the big bumper or small bumper as i to be honest don't know the difference and to me it looks big.

What's the first number of the vin? That'll tell you.

Ah looking at the pics you posted thats a 73, the rear bumpers on the 73's are the same as the ones on the 69.5-72's minus the rubber strip.(it was an option on 73's) They are set out from the body more.

You can see the bumper filler peice for the rear bumper on this car very easily, the older cars dont have that peice.

 

Looks like a nice car! A little rough around the edges, but still nice.

1. Figure out what it needs to be safe/reliable.
2. Figure out what it needs to be complete.
3. Figure out what you want the car to be when its done.
4. Determine what you can and cant do yourself.
Most important...
Develope a plan/budget and stick to it.

Sticking to a budget will be difficult...

Its a 73 for sure.
You will need for the back the small 70-72 bumper brackets and the lower extension fillers. The bumper is the same as what you have. This one is easy to do.
To do the front you will need a small bumper with the brackets and bumper filler or stone guard as some call it. You will have to cut a notch on the bumper and drill new holes for the bumper brackets. There is a very helpful post in regards of the bumper swap. By the way, Welcome to the best forum on the internet.

 

I dont know what you have up there for salvage yards that have Mavs. But the guys in PHX tell me theres some good ones over there. Might be worth it to take a weekend trip with a shopping list. Oh...and if you remove that sticker in the rear window,your car will definately be worth more. It will run better too GO CARDS.

After a little bit of work today, I saw th
at my radiator housing or frame is too rusted and is broken to pieces.

I'll be visiting our junk yard soon to see what I need. Btw what other vehicle year should I look for if I don't find the exact one.

 

I want my car to look exactly like this except the decales at the bottom. What do I need in comparison to my previous pics. Plz share your thoughts. Thanks

Sheet Metal is pretty much the same for all years. Doors,Hoods,Fenders even the comet sheet metal is the same in most cases.
Bumpers, are year specific for style but most everything can be modified. It really depends on what part you are looking for. Radiator frame or radiator suport? Id start by looking at the Project threads to get the feel for what needs to be done, this gets expensive and very time consuming. I can only speak for myself, but I think most would agree that people who do this sort of thing were blessed with a certain afection for, Noise, Power, pain, speed, endorfins, attention, dirt, grease, noxious fumes, and in need of any and all Mood Moderating chemicals that could possibly save our relationships with all of those whom we consider dear. Think about it, aint nobody named Chip Foose on this site and we do this to cars that most people have never heard of. I would buy a Mig welder and practice. Better yet, I dont go out much when Im in Vegas, just stay in my room and empty the mini bar every night. How bout I load up my truck with parts and tools and we work on your car every night.

Ive also got a full radiator support that I cut from my 71 donor if you want it.
