My 75 Comet is a 250 and located above the distributor is a black plastic cylindrical device that has a cable leading from the back of it to the carb and a vacuum hose on the front side going somewhere else. Also some wires leading through the firewall on the driver side. In the car there is a cruise control thingy attached to the turn signal stalk. The wires are chewed up and laying on the floor disconnected. What is the mysterious black cylinder? I assume cruise control. Thoughts and guesses???

Sounds like a cruise control servo to me.

So, if that actually is the cruise control, can I remove it without causing any problems? I need to get to the distrubutor and I don't really want to reinstall it afterwatds. I dont need cruise control in my Comet. That's what my 2006 Chrysler 300 is for.

Yes....you can remove it I suppose. Especially if it is not working and parts of it is missing or disconnected.

You might save the stuff in case you decide to reinstall. I have cruise on my 1976 4-door and I love it.

It would be aftermarket. No Maverick came with FACTORY cruise control.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Ok, out it goes then. I'll save it because it came with the car, but I don't think its.going back in. Is it possible it could be causing some of my high idle problems? It is still getting power and vacuum so I wonder.... I can kick down my idle (eventually) after startup and get her tamed, but after I drive and then stop, the idle skyrockets. I thought maybe the cruise had a part in that, other than my other many vacuum leaks and tune up I needs to do of course. Maybe part of my troubles??

It could be part of your problems....just from a vacuum leak. Remove the cruise control stuff, and fix all the vacuum leaks should be a big help.

You might try fixing the cruise control. Reconnect the wires and fix the vacuum leaks and see how it works. Might be nice.

Cruise Control is what I miss most on road trips. I've been wondering if it was ever available. Will have to consider aftermarket add ons.

I have aftermarket on my 1976 4-door. It works very well. One can still buy brand new kits. Or....look on ebay for old NOS kits. I found one from Sears on ebay for around $70. It was missing the magnets, but I was still able to get those thru Sears.

Thanks. It will go on my wish list. My right leg cramps up during long drives. Makes me wonder about blood clots too. Makes it easy to justify the cost of cruise.

Here is a NEW cruise control kit that requires no vacuum or magnets on the driveshaft to operate. I am not sure if it will work with a Ford style speedometer cable. In anotehr auction for the same typle of kit it said: If installing on any vehicle that does not have an electronic Vehicle Speed Sender (VSS) or does not have a GM- type speedometer this kit will NOT work for your application

    $266:

Here is an Audiovox kit that will work on our cars. It uses vacuum and magnets on the driveshaft. I didn't care for this kit because the controls are mounted on the dash....not near the steering wheel. $107.50 reserve not met yet/$225 But It now.

Here is an old NOS MOBILE AIRE CRUISE CONTROL KIT for $48.80:
