Hi All I was wondering if anyone had a build spec sheet for a 302, I plan to circuit race mine over here in the UK but get a lot of conflicting views on whats best to do to the 302. I cant use a stroker kit or aluminium heads, the stroke must remain the same as well. What I would like is to build a reliable engine with lots of grunt. I hope someone can help as I have a Jaguar owner thats getting on my nerves saying I will never get past him! And then get real serious about suspension mods. Odds are he will kill you if you keep stock suspension no matter how much power you have.
Thanks, I was on the site only yesterday, Ive already sorted the suspension with coilovers, roll bars etc. Re bushed everything and so on but now its on to the main bit. Will give the a ring an ask what they help with. Cheers Phil
i think i mentioned it before - a friend of mine is building a racing legal 302. he's using a boss 302 ford racing block with rhs iron heads. the car is not dynoed yet, but it's supposed to be good for 500hp...
If you have to use stock heads, and you want the ultimate 302, then you need to build a Boss 302. Start with a new Boss block bore it to 4.120, get a forged crank and the best cap screw rods you can. Top it with a set of 351C quench chambered heads. Edelbrock now makes an RPM intake to fit this combo. And choose a cam ground for a boss 302 (1.73 rockers) This will give you a total displacement of 320 cubic inches with the stock 3" stroke. When you're done, you'll have somewhere in the neighborhood of a 500HP small block that'll pull to 8000 rpms. You're looking at a custom set of pistons here and some machine work to fit the Cleveland heads to a Windsor style block, but it's a cinch it'll eat that Jag alive.

Inlet trumpets are not permitted to have automatically controlled adjustment. The production or homologated carburation must be fitted. It may be "gas-flowed" by polishing and internal removal of metal but the intake and outlet flange dimensions must remain as original. [/FONT][/FONT]
Sounds like you need to build a Boss 302, but use a New Boss block, bored to 4.065. You'll also need original Boss 302 heads (which are the same as Cleveland heads, except for the coolant ports) and from the description of the intake, it sounds like you could use the new Edelbrock intakes for this (only the original production TYPE of induction must be used) You will need to use Boss 302 style pistons(to match the different valve layout of the Boss/Cleveland heads), but you could play with rod length here, as this is not defined in those rules. Boss pistons used a 289 pin height and a 289 length rod which is about .060 longer than a std 302 rod.
He can't use Boss 302 canted valve heads. Has to be an inline head. I am curious about this as well.............. Maverick's only came with two barrel carbs. Is this rule strictly enforced so you MUST use a two barrel carb or what?
Doesn't say what car the head has to come from, just "standard production component" and "same manufacturer" which would lead me to believe as long as it's a Ford
Even if he is limited to a 2 bbl carb, that's not really a handicap. Some the dirt track guys have been limited to a 2 bbl carb too, and it's not a handicap. I've seen at least one article on off road raced Fords where they were also limited to a 2 bbl carb and they were still making serious power. Put enough engine under a 500 cfm Holley and it'll flow more than 500 cfm. The Nascar motors have been limited to a 390 cfm carb too and look at where they're at now.
