i built a motor similar to that. i used a 351 lightning short block, rpm heads and intake, fords f303 cam and a 750dp. it was torque monster. the carb was a little big, should have gone with a 700 or 650. the roller cam was worth it over the flat tappet cam. it would be out of power around 5800 rpm.

Those heads are very limiting for a 351. You should look into some TFS Twisted Wedge heads or some AFR's.

Mavman is right. The 367 hP kit is for a 302 and the 400 HP kit is for a 351. Even so, you can do so much better.

Cubes don't always equal more HP, it usually just lowers the power band.
Which is perfect for a street car, instead of having to rev it to 6800 you can make the same power at 5800 with a bigger engine.

A 400HP 351W would be very fun! Granted, you can always make more HP, the convenience of the kit may be worth it to you.

Except that that all-in-one-box convenience and "no guesswork" kit doesnt include pushrods or rockers :D

I believe TFS kit's do and even come with valve covers. I'm not sure if they make 351 kits though.

That was very much the case with my build. My old 302 wasn't set up much differently than the 351 that's in it now, other than going from manifolds to headers, (albeit small ones) and 2.5" exhaust. From the two simulation software programs I used, (which are no substitute for a dyno or a timeslip, but fine for a ballpark) my 351 produces only about 20-30 more hp than the 302 did, BUT it peaks a full 1k RPM lower and the torque (410 or thereabouts) is massively improved. It may not be that much faster than my 302 on the dragstip, I'll never know, but it feels like a monster vs. what I had before.

...But take whatever I say with a grain of salt. Listen to the real engine builders. Just be sure they know exactly what this car's purpose is and what you intend to spend getting there.

I almost thought I was reading a thread on the Corral or some forum filled with kids that only want to drag race. It's not always about the MOST horsepwer you can possibly make. And unless you are over 500hp you arent close to that anyways.

Sometimes driveability, reliabilty, and just pure fun to drive are more important. unless its a trailer queen drag car then who cares about the most horspwer possible. Build the motor within your budget and build it for what you want to drive. Take it from somebody who threw away ALOt of money making his car no fun to drive and unreliable cause he was worried about being faster. Now Ive spent more money lately actually downgrading my car to make it more fun to just drive.
