I'm removing the drive shaft from my C4. The C-brackets came out fine and the drive shaft dropped out easily. I tried pulling the yolk out of the tail shaft and it came out about halfway and stopped. Won't budge and am afraid to just yank it out because I don't won't to damage it. Why is it stuck and is this normal?

Probably varnish on the forward section of the yoke. Does it rotate and just not come out or it is bound (won't turn and won't come out) ?

I don't think it turns. In fact I don't think I could push it back in either. It started pouring rain out and had to come inside.

Other than possible varnish, is there any other reason it should be hung up?

It could be that the bushing and yoke is gaulded.

So if it's stuck and I can't get it out, should I try to put it all back together and drive it to a tranny shop, or can I do this in my driveway? It seems I have to drop the tail shaft in order to work on this properly.

if it came out half way it's not...gaulded.
it could be it created a vac. in the snout...:yup:
try it again after it sits a minute. pulling on it will not hurt anything.

Take a BFH and drive it out by hitting the yoke on the shoulder portion. Could be someone drove an old tailshaft bushing into the tail housing and it's now stuck on the portion of the yoke poking thru the new bushing. Or it may just be the fluid suction keeping it from coming out.

Ok, I will try again tomorrow if the rain lets up. I'll check in afterwards.

This should do the trick, but I'd use a block of wood to hit on. These will get varnish on them over time. Just " tap " on it with the block of wood and it will move slightly with each tap. Once you get it off, spray the splines with PB Blaster, or equivalent, and put it back on and pull it off a few times. It will loosen right up! :)
