Hi I'm new to the forums, and we'll new to cars. I've always been in love with old cars and decided finally to buy one. I've been looking at a 1970 Ford Maverick which is listed for 2500. I've talked him down to 2,000 but still don't know if its completely worth it. Here is what his ad on craiglist says. "Selling my 1970 Ford Maverick. Green in color has 190k miles on a straight 6 170 motor. Car has all new upper and lower ball joins control arm and tie rod ends. all new wheel cylenders. plus a ton of other newer parts thats too long to list. car runs and drives great, only flaw is the gas gage dosnt work. Only reason im selling is because i bought a truck and now have no need for the car. its been my daily driver for over 5 years. call or text me at 937-760-7390 i can text you pics of it names travis Asking $2500 O.B.O, would only condider trades for a bass boat or a street bike, no car trades" I then proceeded to ask him for pictures of the car along with some information. I found out that it does have rips and tears in the seats, even though he put a seat cover over it. He also mentioned that there is "surface rust" on the rocker and quarter panels. Along with a jensen cd player and 2 6x9 boss speakers. Any other questions just let me know. EDIT* Another thing he mentioned was that the headliner is out and that it is all original and "for the age it's not too bad but by no means is it perfect." Also having its original title which is a plus ig.
Well once I find out I'll update you, other than that what do you think a car like this should run for?
Anytime I see this quote, I politely inform them that a sure-fire way to motivate me into parting with my money is to explain what new parts he's talking about. More often than not, the "too long to list" parts list fills a half of a page if you're lucky. The ad stated that the ONLY FLAW was the gas gauge- upon speaking to him, you uncovered a few more flaws. My advice- expect more and adjust your offer accordingly.
it looks like a...69.5'... are you going to swap out the... 170 motor, pan filled C-4 transmission and 7.5 4-lug rearend? are you planning on having the car painted? it also has non staggered shocks. it also has the 4 lug wheels...not many styles to choose from. it needs...new window and door seals. where is it located, location has to do with worth also. has the...dash pad...been covered? it looks like it has been repainted...that needs to be checked out closely... "He also mentioned that there is "surface rust" on the rocker and quarter panels." ...Frank...
What you have there is a very early 1970, we like to call them 69.5. The key is in the package tray and not on the steering column. This is a good thing and comes with its own set of differences. It looks to be missing the horn ring, not a big deal because one off a 69 mustang will fit just fine. Go to where then car is and check it out. Look in the trunk for rust, look under the car and in the engine compartment for rust. If the cowl does not leak and it has minimal rust then it is worth every every penny of $2000. Good luck on the purchase, and if you decide not to get it let me know. I would be interested in it.
Well I don't know a lot about cars and I am really only looking for an old muscle car that is in pretty good shape and I don't have to do anything to it, only until something fails and I fix that etc etc. So I don't think it'd be switching things out if they still worked. As for location it is Carlisle Ohio.
I asked him if it leaks and he said to my knowledge it doesn't, I'm really trying to get as much info about the car before I take the hour and a half trip to actually see it, but so far for sure if I do make the trip I'll check the cowl, and then pick around it for signs of rust.
So I've finally decided that I'm not going to buy that car. Although in all honesty looking around on these forums has really pulled me towards the Maverick/Comet community, and I know for a fact that I want my first car to be a Maverick, so hopefully I'll find it sooner or later. Thanks for helping me decide if it is a solid car in the first place, which is what I'll use for the next car that I find.
I think you made a good decision. If someone has to qualify what they say to cover themselves run away. Of course he knows whether his car leaks or not.
Yeah, and like I said I'm just going to keep an eye open for the right one, as I have a car (mothers car -__-) so it will do until I can find the perfect car (hopefully Maverick) that wont be too much of a hassle.
