Hey everyone. I have a v8 302 engine on my 71 mav. I give it only street use. What carburetor would you guys recomend? Should I get a 500cfm edelbrock? Ive heard holley carbs are good. I have a edelbrock performance intake which is for a 4 barrel carb. Whats good on gas and better overall? Thanks in advance guys.... Oh yeah what would u guys recomd, electric or manual choke? I live in cali...
Unless you have some mods done to it or are planning on some in the future the 500 should be okay. I've always used Holleys but some on here say Edelbrocks are better for the street. If you are planning any mods to the motor in the future you might think about a 600 or so. You can always jet it down a bit until you do the mods.
Holley 570 Street Avenger. Excellant carb. As far as choke selection goes, I remove all mine. With a good ignition system, you'll rarely ever need it. A few minutes of quality time spent babying the gas on cold mornings is well worth removing the posibility of choke problems
Edelbrocks are more of a street freindly carb that's easy to adjust. Holleys are a carb that takes a lot of set up to optimize but are great when done. Holley used to be my choice, but the older I get, the more reliable I want my car to be. I got tired of tinkering with Holleys.
Bull sheite. Holleys are no harder to tune than an Edelbrock.And they need no tinkering. Once you set one, it'll stay set for years. If you had problems, it was either the ignition causing it or you started with an old Holley that had sat for years, or you're the type of person who's never satisfied and always hunting for that greener grass over the next hill.
You have that backwards. I'd throw an Edelbrock out into the street and run over it with my truck before I'd replace a Holley with one.
...and I guess yall' think quadrajets are crap too. Edelbrock is the modern day quadrajet. People remove both of them because they don't understand the complexity of them. And by complexities, I mean they tore one down and seen all those parts and got scared. Holleys have far fewer parts and work well for those that are scared of good carbs.
It takes a $100 jet kit and a accellorater pump spring kit to properly set a Holley up and get the 4 barrel to a smooth transfer. Edelbrocks take a screw driver.
Edelbrock carbs are a copy of a Carter carb that has been around for a long time. You really cant use the term carb and modern in the same sentence too.
Say what you want but that's the way it is. Holleys are great performance carbs but are just to sensative to weather and dirt.
