I drove down to Macon this morning with an open header, little over 50 miles, to have new exhaust put on my 6 cylinder header. I got Harold to remove the old exhaust and install new pipes and muffler. We went with 2-1/2” out the header into a 2-1/2” inlet short turbo muffler located under the back seat area. Harold made a 2” fork coming out of the 2-1/2” outlet. Both 2" tail pipes go over the rear axle and the Right pipe exits behind the rear tire. The Left pipe runs between the rear end housing and gas tank then 90’s back and exits behind the rear tire. It doesn’t sound like a V8 but it also doesn’t sound 6 cylinder either...it got its own sound. Going down the road it kinda reminds me of an old inboard boat from the early 60’s with a little bit of flat head V8 mixed into the sound. Here's a short video of the sound. http://1bad6t.com//media/6cylExh.mp4 you might have to "Save target As" to you computer to get it to play if it doesn't play.
That sounds great! Mine is stock quiet. That may change now! What was the entire cost, including the header without the coating? I'm looking at a new exhaust sometime as I have just been patching things. I really want a single pipe header, but My God, they're so expensive!
It seems to be a lot better across the board. Mid to high comes in really stronger. Gotta remember I replaced a 1-7/8" pipe and added the header at the same time. I didn't play this morning in traffic with open exhaust, also the timing and carb needed adjusted badly. Took half a tank when it should took less than a 1/8th to drive to Macon
sound wow thats a great sound for a six....sixes can sound kinda funny through typical hot rod exhaust. Looks like your exhaust man is a talented pipe bender.
I have to admit, I was skeptical :sorry: when I first clicked on your MP4, but I am really impressed! It sounds really good! Your exhaust guy did some nice clean work, too. Do you get any "really bad" interior resonnance at cruising speeds?
I was surprised as much as you with the outcome of the sound. The resonance is very reasonable level and not annoying at all
Sounds great! Sounds better than that one six-banger we heard one time with a Flowmaster 44 on it. Earl said it best when he said, "Sounds like an elephant farting." I may have to steal that muffler idea.
