I tried searching without success. Can anyone recommend a brand and color code of spray paint that would best match the stock black dash?
I asked this same question a while ago. I was recommended by Acornridgeman to use this: SEM Satin Black #15243 on plastic parts (be sure to follow the cleaning and prep steps as per SEM) HotRod Satin Black kit #HR010 on metal parts So that is my plan. :Handshake
Scott Drake makes the correct charcoal paint marketed for 67-73 mustangs as black charcoal metallic laquer part number L4464. It's a perfect match.
This actually brings up another question for me. Is the interior paint on the doors supposed to match the dash or is that just straight black? And I assume the plastic interior pieces are just black?
When I spray the interior I use the same SEM Hot Rod Black on all of it. Inside of the doors, steering column, up the "A" and "B" pillers, and also the rear window ledge. It has the right shade of grey/black and most important, has the right amount of gloss to it. As for the plastic, getting the right amount of gloss is also very important. The SEM #15243 black plastic dye, available in spray cans, is an exact match to stock black. I've seen the Scott Drake interior paint. Never used it myself but I'm sure it is a fine product too.
There are no metallic "bits' or speckles in the HR - not really sure I see that in the stock paint either. Like a metallic it will look different depending on how the light hits it. Bottom line (for me anyway) is I like the SEM products. The HR is a very durable 2 part catalized paint that mimicks the gloss sheen of the factory paint. When all the sprayed parts of the interior are finished it looks very good and very original. I've also had an NOS ashtray that looked too dark when put into a 40 year old original dash. I suppose time and UV light can change the stock looking color on different cars. Probably there was a variation from assembly plants and years, as paint mixes changed. Which is why regardless of product you use to paint your dash, paint it all for a uniform finish. Scott Drake makes many great things - I'm sure that paint is nice.
I need to add - stay away from the RAINBOW brand sold by Mustang places - that stuff is terrible to get decent coverage with.
My car definitely had metallic in the dashboard paint from the factory. I repainted it with the Drake paint and it matches very well. I still have an original instrument bezel which you can see the metallic in. I sandblasted my doors before I checked to see if the paint was metallic or straight black though. I'm guessing metallic because I can see it in the b-pillar paint and the back deck. The Drake paint is quite nice and goes on well but I do with it was two part.
Dark Charcoal Metallic is correct for a black interior. The Mustang Supply house lacquer is good .. its VERY thin so you must apply very thin coats.. You could also just go to Autozone and pick up some Dark Charcoal Metallic from the Duplicolor touch up rack. That paint will be a little thicker .. GM FORD and MOPAR all should have a version that looks good.
The correct color is charcoal black metallic. The Scott Drake number is L-4464 & the NPD number is AP-4464. These are Seymour aerosol cans and match very well. The PPG Duracryl number is 32586. (about $75 a pint) In either case, it is recommended to topcoat over a black basecoat. This was used in most Ford cars from the '60's & '70's.
