Pulling engine out. Which is easier: engine alone, or with transmission attached?

    From down under.

    Soon, I will be swapping out the 6 for an 8. I was contemplating dropping the engine straight down on to a moving dolly, raising the front end of the car with the engine hoist and rolling the engine out from under the front. I would like to do the reverse with the 8 to avoid scratching the engine compartment.

    I did an engine and trans this way on my other car. Then, I was lucky enough to have access to a car hoist. I had to do some test fitting with the engine. Doing it from the bottom allowed me to install and remove the engine three or four times in an afternoon by myself.

    Anyone attempted this or know if it can or can’t be done?

    I just thought of something...I will need to store the engine on the floor of the garage for however long it takes me to put in the suspension kit. Your pictures of engine+trans looks like it is VERY LONG. I have an attached 3-car garage, with three cars in it, and very little extra space.

    I just might have to pull the engine separately, just because i have little extra room to store it.

    I have connected engines and transmissions enough times to do it easily and quickly. I have added an engine to an installed transmission, and added a transmission to an installed engine. It was definitely easier to install the engine to the installed transmission, simply because you are working from above, and not upside down pushing the transmission up and into the engine while trying to line everything up and bolt it all together.

    I helped do 3 R&C swaps. they took two 8 hour days each to install start to finish. 1st day cut out the shock towers to weld in the cross memeber and bolt on some parts. 2nd day bolt on some more parts and plumb the brakes. Both days a lot of picture were taken...long lunch breaks...paint touch-ups and other non productive BS taken place.

    I plan on at least 3 or 4 days of actual work. Including removal of engine, replacing engine, rewiring the bay, and installation of the kit.

    I don't have all the parts yet. I still need PS pump and plumbing, brake rotors and backing plates and calipers, hubs, and shocks. Any suggestions on where to get these would be appreciated. I prefer new, and would really like to just go to O'Reilly and buy them, if possible.

    Does anyone know if I can walk into the local parts store, and ask for parts? If so, what year model and make do I tell them I need?

    it's easier to get it out in one piece and then split them afterwards to squish them into their respective spots. And the reverse is also true when going in the other direction.

    can'r be done on these cars due to tight frame rail widths and the corssmember being permanantly installed. Just think how easy it would be to put a V8 in from the bottom in that little car though. lol

    Damn it, forgot about that crossmember. Dont know what I was thinking. There go my easy plans.

    Been 20 years since I pulled the 170 out and put the 250 in. Must have lost a few brain cells along the way.

    All that is painless if you use the studs I'm talking about. Drop the engine in, align the 4" studs to the transmission bolt holes and shove em together. Goes in like "butter" this way.

    A V8 will not fit in thru the bottom of the car. It's too wide to clear the shock towers bottoms

    Get on O'Reilly's website and look everything up, write down the part numbers, then hit the local store.This way you KNOW getting the parts you need.

    Get yourself a cheap 4 wheel dolly, or make one out of some 2x4's, keep the engine and tranny whole, and just wheel it outta the way.
