Even though he needed to get a tap, it helps to bring the bolt so the thread size can be measured, or checked with a threading die to make certain the correct size can be verified. I've been chasing parts for the better part of 36 years and it ALWAYS helps to bring the broken part with you (or in this case the crank bolt) to verify you get the right part (or tool in this case) the first time. Nothing is more frustrating than to have to make more than one trip to get the right part (tool) to do a two minute job back at the house.
