alright.....so im looking for advice on what I should do with my vehicle this year..I have the t5 in her right now its fun with slapping gears and all but it feels like its not as smooth as it should be so I was looking at the 4r70w..I know its auto and have to make the change back to it but I dont mind just as long as I can run it HARD and not have to worry about the grinding and stock t5 blowing on me..so which is better..t5 or the 4r70w

Is that 4r70 a computer controlled unit?

Yep they're dumb without a PCM or stand alone controller...

I thought they were com controlled. Might want to consider an AOD if ur not up to the cost and hassle of installing a comp setup.

I got a better idea: Toploader 4 speed. You're in San Antone, home of the best Toploader rebuilder in the USA: David Kee at www.4speedtoploaders.com

i would get a new t5z. they are really nice. ive put them in several cars lately and they shift like butter. they can be had on line for around $1700 last time i checked. i think american drivetrain offers free shipping some times on them.

yeah.. it sounds like the OP wants to stay with an OD type trans and I'd probably just look at that t5z as Bryant mentiones above(although I've seen them much cheaper than that price he mentiones). That comp controlled trans will take some serious power(I see many running them with S/C and/or N2O setups).. but IMO the cost is just too high(the standalone controller itself was $700-1,000 last I looked a few years back). Not to mention that you'll lose some of the fun factor by going to a slushbox.

Or move towards a much stronger tremec or similar if bigger power.. and the subsequent flogging resulting from it.. is in the cars future.

If you use a manual valve body and non lockup converter in the 4r70w do you still need a controller? I'm looking to swap to a overdrive trans and would prefer the 4r70w over an aod as its much stronger.

i installed a 4r70w into my comet, using a stand alone controller. http://www.usshift.com/
2 shift table capable, paddle sifter capable.
havent' been able to drive it yet. can't wait to use it. will review both controller and transmission soon.

hmmm.. I would guess no.. but apparently google wins again.

Not sure what they've done there.. but maybe you can replicate it or just buy the VB to swap into your core.

Yeah.. buudddy! That is SUPER cheap! Almost makes me want to retrofit one of the 4L60E's I have built up from other projects over into my Comet. lol

Are you thinking about using the paddle shifter option?

I rode in a friends friends 03'(?) Firebird about 3 years ago that had paddle shifters installed(4L80E, I think?) and that thing shifted INSTANTLY. During our short drive through an industrial park drive.. he tapped it down twice real quick and power drifted around a 30MPH bend doing around 50 and then bumped it right back to nuetral throttle cruising speeds in the blink of an eye like we never even did anything illegal. I've also been in really nice mod'd Porsche 911S and seen quite a few rods running them as well.. but I was seriously impressed from the passenger seat of that old Firebird.

Id consider an AOD with the 4r70w upgrades just for simplicity.
