You could also compile the oldest and the newest Maverick/Comet of each year still surviving :)

The best way to incorporate all of the "add-ons" and "stats" would be to build an actual database, rather than simply posting a list. Regardless of the method, I would like to see it live here, on this site somewhere.

The trouble with the oldest and newest, is the the fact that there are more than one plant, and we have no way to tell what dates the cars were built. All we could do would be to assume that they follow the VIN number, when we know they necessarily don't.

I think we'll have to see what 'extras' are available once we move over to the new forum. Once the data is in an intelligible form, I'm sure there will be tons of interesting things to do with it. Thanks, Bob! :Handshake

As Paul pointed out, without a actual build date, oldest/newest will be impossible to determine... Back before Ford switched to the cheesy data label stickers(I believe it was Fed mandate), the metal tags had a date on them, but it was the scheduled date so could be wrong as well...

The ultra low VINs will no doubt be the earliest produced as the ones numbered less than 100050 are likely pre-production, but once regular production begins it's anyone's guess... 100123 may have been the 2456th built or just as easily the 101st...

In case of Comet 500001 would be lowest VIN and theoretically could have been produced before Job 1 Maverick...

    You guys are on it!

I went through and scrubbed the data several times. I treated the multiple owners as separate instances thinking “cars on the road vs. cars in the graveyard” approach. It all comes down to how we want to interpret the data. Excel can do allot of things but Access or another dynamically linked database application would be far superior. I’m thinking an input panel (form in MS terms) that encompasses all the pertinent information (we could even include meta data like region, location, time last seen, previous owner etc…) then develop a few reports on the back end that the administrator could run and release periodically. That way, whomever is crunching the stats won’t have to re-invent the wheel every time.

Going Nutty! We could even come up with a VIN code decoder specifically for our cars. Would be pretty neat for new comers to sign up and be able to immediately run their VIN and find all kinds of interesting stats!

We could attach build dates, for the cars that people have bought Marti reports for...

You could actually attach the marti report itself (or all of "its" data as manual inputs) All of it is predicated on how much the owner wants to share. It would be supercool if it were web based but that starts to get into higher levels of technology and the monies that go with it.

Just for giggles (and work is slow today) I created a mockup, sometimes it's easier to see what your after with some sort of visual aid. :tiphat:

That looks pretty fancy, Kevin! I like it. :thumbs2: If a database was put together and it was self-serve, like the above graphic suggests (??), I would personally like to see as little manual input as possible, in order to keep the data accurate and reliable. An example of this would be having to select Screen Names from a drop-down list directly linked to the site. This would avoid a person making a typing mistake, especially when a lot of screen names have non-traditional words, phrases and/or numbers in them.

In your example, how much and what info would the owner have to input? Or is this an Admin screen only? The reason I ask this, is I see drop-downs for things such as Plants, etc that could be automatically populated from the person entering the VIN.

I definitely see a growing trend towards a full-blown registry being desirable, given the amount and type (your suggestions) of interest this thread has garnered in the last year or so that I have been updating it.

I have no experience with any registries, nor do I know what means other enthusiasts use to collect and report their data with.

A big free-for-all VIN database could have some serious potential to have lots of irrational or incomplete entries. I would support, however, any processes that could be put into place to control and even validate the information being collected. We could also start creating fields for door sticker info such as trim, paint and DSO codes, etc. I know the MCCI tries to collect this data from its members as well.

As far as the "currently being driven" vs. "RIP", I really don't see a big need to divide the numbers, but maybe a radio-button or 'ticky-box' could be used to flag the cars one way or the other and have the ability to run the reports with "All", "Current" or "RIP".

I'm not a computer guy by any means, so I really have no idea of how easy/hard this would all be to make happen???

I would be interested to hear what Stefan has to say/recommend. After all, it's HIS sandbox we're all playing in.;)

    Done! Thanks for sharing!! :Handshake

All valid points, in my experience the “least” amount of manual inputs and controlled source inputs the better. Meaning, fields like plant, color, doors would only allow choices that are established by the applications. The drop down dialogue approach would control what the user could pick (i.e. pick list). This will make reporting infinitely easier.

Anomalies such and spelling, spaces, variants (two or 2) would be eliminated. The VIN would unlimited provide allot of data through relational fields, meaning once the VIN is entered, all associated data would be attached (plant code etc…).

I’m not well versed in the “web” interface side of things and I’d like to see what Stefan’s thoughts are as well. If we end up going with Excel, Access or an sql based platform I’d be more than comfortable lending a hand.
